Garmin 396 question

My Garmin 396 always starts with the screen in full darkness which makes it hard to see the boot up. Once it starts, the screen can be brightened up with the power switch and then the rocker switch. Is there a control for brightness on startup that I am missing?

Yes. On the display menu. I can't recall from memory, but there is a setting.

PS- One of the battery settings will also affect brightness.
 
Does anybody know how to get a garmin aera 560 to be more daylight visible? I have the brightness turned up all the way and it is almost impossible to read.
