Anchorage Alaska
Crappy weather day in Anchorage so decided to finally post the results of how I spent my COVID vacation.

As they say “timing is everything”. I dismantled my 180 hp cub on Feb 2nd 2020. By March we were headed into isolation / lockdown.
Having this project was huge in maintaining my sanity and attitude.

Ive owned this thing for 30 years and had recovered the fuselage in 1991 and wings a few years later. Many people asked why I was redoing it as it still looked good. To me 30 years and most of its life on floats in Alaska is long enough.

N3495Z is a 1960 PA-18A-150 (now 180) and was a factory corrosion proofed cub with the “metalized” spray coating on all of the steel parts along with oil injected into the tubing.
Very few minor corrosion issues were found with the exception of the normal aft door post rust behind the trim.

Decided to spend some of the kids inheritance; so many new upgrades were added.

2000 lb gross wt, Ankle saver tubing added, Willow mountain floorboards and long baggage with elevator cables below floor, Super sized baggage door, Flanagan modification to install full glass and skylite, Dakota Cub master cylinders, Airglas GLH 3000 wheel skis, Hydraulic power pac and controls installed. Floor mounted seat belts, and rear seat heat. Floor boards, cables and wiring all new. Weld on float fittings, Boot cowl aluminum and fairings new as usual.
All steel epoxy primed Aerothane over that. Poly fiber fabric with Juneau white and Pontiac red Aerothane.

406 ELT, Whelen LED strobes and split LED landing lights with Maxpulse control, All new Attlee Dodge gear and Cabane, AOSS shocks, 35” Bushwheels, Adjustable rear seat frame, New Fine line seats. Garmin Com and GTX 335 with ADSB, GDL 50R for ADSB in. CGR30p.
All new Aluminum interior.
Installed the Dakota cub aileron cable pulleys with bearings which made and amazing change. Almost no drag felt in the controls. Highly recommend them!

Stripped out the old gyros and all vacuum system stuff.

Very pleased with weight at 1168 on 35s.

Topped it off with Aerocets floats.

My shop is now empty; but my wife has just handed me “the list”. Oh well....... said something about it being her turn.

Simple looking, clean and classy. I think most of us are in envy!

Well done. Could you post a few more pictures of the panel?

The center section is made to swap out the gps with a large iPad. They mount with a hinge at the top so it’s just pull the pin and its off I also use the flight-com portable intercom mounted as you see. I bring the headset cables up from between my knees, so no cords hanging in my face. In that location the intercom is super easy to reach. The flight-coms are cheap, work great and last for years.

Very nice! I remember seeing this plane back in December when it was mostly just a frame.

Congrats! This is what I want out of my A model one of these days minus the 180 upgrade... Flanagan STC looks so awesome. Already have it purchased for my eventual rebuild. Do you have the drawings? The ones Cub Crafters sent me were a Xerox and pretty poor quality...

Very nice Ed, really like it.

I am curious about using a different method of attaching the glass than what the Flanagan STC calls out. Seems like overkill with a lot of added weight over the way the glas is attached to the L21.

Thanks Steve. The design is an overkill in attachments. I hate all the riv-nuts as it calls for so I riveted in nut plates. Also fabricated the fairings inside to clean up the exposed cables and pulleys in the aft wing root.

I will send you a pm with thoughts on some other ideas.

Very nice!! Well done, should be a great ride.

Thanks Bill
it is my favorite. We hear lots of opinions about the 180 hp Cubs. Many will talk of being sluggish or nose heavy. If they are using the Penn Yan conversion without the thrustline change then they are probably accurate. Mark (thrustline) said they were building their mounts at a -6 deg and basically pulling the nose down, making it feel heavy. Using his mod puts it at about a -2 deg and works great. It will always be my preference, and really shines on floats. I’ve got two 18As now and both in similar condition. I put the stock 150 on the same floats for last years season while this one was in pieces and really began to appreciate/ miss the 180. This 180 cub is a much better “balanced airplane” then my stock winged 150 hp, as I find myself rarely needing to touch the trim when landing as long as I’m using flaps; but not so with the stock winged 150. The long ailerons to me are no more heavy feeling then the stock wing, unless you really lean on them. Didn’t get me wrong as this stock cub is a good flying airplane.
I am very blessed to have these in my care.
