Anchorage Alaska
Crappy weather day in Anchorage so decided to finally post the results of how I spent my COVID vacation.
As they say “timing is everything”. I dismantled my 180 hp cub on Feb 2nd 2020. By March we were headed into isolation / lockdown.
Having this project was huge in maintaining my sanity and attitude.
Ive owned this thing for 30 years and had recovered the fuselage in 1991 and wings a few years later. Many people asked why I was redoing it as it still looked good. To me 30 years and most of its life on floats in Alaska is long enough.
N3495Z is a 1960 PA-18A-150 (now 180) and was a factory corrosion proofed cub with the “metalized” spray coating on all of the steel parts along with oil injected into the tubing.
Very few minor corrosion issues were found with the exception of the normal aft door post rust behind the trim.
Decided to spend some of the kids inheritance; so many new upgrades were added.
2000 lb gross wt, Ankle saver tubing added, Willow mountain floorboards and long baggage with elevator cables below floor, Super sized baggage door, Flanagan modification to install full glass and skylite, Dakota Cub master cylinders, Airglas GLH 3000 wheel skis, Hydraulic power pac and controls installed. Floor mounted seat belts, and rear seat heat. Floor boards, cables and wiring all new. Weld on float fittings, Boot cowl aluminum and fairings new as usual.
All steel epoxy primed Aerothane over that. Poly fiber fabric with Juneau white and Pontiac red Aerothane.
406 ELT, Whelen LED strobes and split LED landing lights with Maxpulse control, All new Attlee Dodge gear and Cabane, AOSS shocks, 35” Bushwheels, Adjustable rear seat frame, New Fine line seats. Garmin Com and GTX 335 with ADSB, GDL 50R for ADSB in. CGR30p.
All new Aluminum interior.
Installed the Dakota cub aileron cable pulleys with bearings which made and amazing change. Almost no drag felt in the controls. Highly recommend them!
Stripped out the old gyros and all vacuum system stuff.
Very pleased with weight at 1168 on 35s.
Topped it off with Aerocets floats.
My shop is now empty; but my wife has just handed me “the list”. Oh well....... said something about it being her turn.
