Moving Floatplanes with Motorized Trailers, Pickers, or Whatnot.

How do you all move floatplanes from the hangar to the water?

Is it possible to build one that accommodates 1320s to 4930s? What are the design minimum for height, width, and length of the lifting rails?

Pictures or video of your favorite prime-mover and critique of different designs would be helpful. Thanks.

There's a number of these trucks aka "gators" at the seaplane base at Renton WA airport.

Gear down - from the pavement to the bottom of the spreader bars is 25".
Gear up - it is 21" there is only about 4" of clearance between the bottom of the keels and the pavement when the gear is down.

Hope this helps

Bill

Our old friend Denver Carney (the Ophir gofer) built the first float plane mover from a 4 wheel drive van. He could see real good over the hood!

Remember that the weight is all on the spreader bars, and they are FRAGILE. If you are going to move little planes and big planes, you need to have the plane lifted as far out on the spreader bars as possible to keep from stressing the spreader bar. See the Rust's dolly has a lift cylinder, and also they have the one across to move the bunks out for larger planes.
