Doubt about Poly Fiber red color?.

Hello everybody,
this is Agustin from Patagonia (southern Argentina). First of all, I wanna thank you a lot for the extremely useful information of this site, for somebody who lives far from everything this forum is priceless. We are building a new Supercub, idea of the project was a rebuild but finaly we ara making a brand new Super Cub with many Alaskan and Stol modifications.

The doubt is about a color, we probably will paint it like the original scheme of the picture, the question is: the white looks like 105 Insignia White but which of the Poly Fiber red is the red colour of the trims: 189 Madrid Red, 190 Tenneesee Red or 191 Pontiac Red?

mine is 110 Juneau white polytone and 190 Tennessee red ranthane. 110 Juneau white ranthane on everything white that’s not fabric

the 110 Juneau white has a touch of grey. The Juneau white ranthane is a more cream color.

Kind of looks like Pontiac red being a little brighter but it could just be the light.

Don't think you can tell from a picture. Have to work with a paint chart I guess.

Looks like Madrid to me, Not Tennessee, that's darker.

White is a very hard color to see in the air. Consider red wings so it is easy for others to see you.

This is pontiac red. In fact, all the pictures in this gallery: http://www.supercub.org/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=33077&title=crash-27s-pa-14&cat=769 are pontiac red on insignia white. Dad was a big fan of pontiac red imron over insignia.

I thought for the images of the Poly Fiber chart that Pontiac is the darker of the three, then Tennessee and Madrid is the lighter. Is this wrong?

Good discussion of shades of red here. Tennessee red is definitely more "red". Crash (sr) painted one of my motorcycles with left over Madrid red from that super cub and it's got a bit of orange tint in it.

pontiac red

Thumbs up from me on your paint scheme.

I'm also in favor of red on the wings elevators/horizontal stabilizers. Both for visibility and burning off frost. A red wing will clear off the frost faster than a white wing. I also like flat paint on the top engine cowling panel, preferably black. Gloss paint up there reflecting the sun is hard on the eyes.

I was was amazed at how much more expensive red paint was compared to other colors.

This is Juneau White with Pontiac Red Aerothane.

FYI. The N #s are Vinal from Aerographics in Colorado, and their red is a perfect match to the Pontiac Red

Sweet plane, than you. Looks like Pontiac is the darker of the three reds.

Is Aerothane more satin than the shinny Ranthane?

Here's the polyfiber color charts. Madrid tends towards orange, Sante fe is dark red, tennessee and Pontiac are the reddest red's. I think the factory used tennessee with glacier white in their 1978 models, I used Pontiac red with Juneau in the plane photo. Insignia white is a bit brighter white than Juneau, glacier white is a bit ivory-er.

Thank you for the pictures!. In your pictures of the chart the colors differences are easier to distinguish, not like the chart I found online.

I thought Pontiac was darker than Tennessee, and is the opposite. I can see Madrid tends toward orange.

Thanks, I picked Pontiac because it just seemed like it was the crisper red, but honestly they are so close it's hard to tell them apart

If you think it's tough picking a red paint for your airplane....
a couple years ago, I decided to paint my house red,
so down to the paint store I went.
Wow, there are a lot of reds!
You'd think they'd have one called "farmhouse red" or "barn red", but oh no-- that'd be too easy.
The paint store will sell you little half-pint sampler cans...
it turns out that the paints you pick to choose from are one color on the chart, but the samples dabbed on top of the cans are another.
Then when you paint small sections on your house they're a bit different,
and after you pick your paint & do the whole house it's different yet.
Long story short is that I ended up with a red house that's just not quite the color I had in mind--
not the end of the world, but disappointing.

Reminds me of our house painting project 10 years ago. We picked out the paint: sort of a dusty beige with rust trim. Got it mixed up, prepped the house. We had a window of opportunity of a day and a half.

The splotch on the can looked right, so on went the dusty beige--hmm, looks more like adobe/brown. Oh well, we need to get it done.

Then the trim, oops, looks like a dusty rose, not rust. Tried a little and thought, "OK, we can live with that."

We got done before the weather went bad. It was nothing like what we had ordered, but neighbors came by and praised our striking and beautiful choice of colors....

The Aerothane has a nice shine to it.

FY I. Aerothane colors especially reds and yellow have light pigmentation in the mix. To get a bright / crisp color make sure to spray a base coat of white over the gray poly spray or any dark primer; otherwise you will get a darker red finish in that area with the same amount of coats. White epoxy primer on the metal parts is adequate.

i usually wind up with four to five thin / moderately heavy coats of the red to get the color depth I like. Light coats when working the vertical surfaces to prevent runs.

Each coat will change the final tone of the color.

if you go with less to try and save money the final color may look thin when out in the sun.

go with Pontiac, you wont be disappointed. Cubcrafters uses there own colors and ppg paint. so not really a good comparison
