PA 18-95 Data Plate

Thanks for your replay: noted. You say that plates were stailess steel since 1951

the plates materal according to Cub Doctor “
The plates were aluminum up into the 80's when the FAA mandated that all manufacturers make the plates out of stainless.”
Please clarify this matter.

Clyde (Cub Doctor) certainly knows better about what went on in the Piper Factory, but from a regulation standpoint, CAR 3 Amendment 3-1 dated 7 Dec 1949 changed CAR 3.791 to read "Identification Plate. A fireproof identification plate shall be attached to the structure in an accessible location where it will not likely be defaced during normal service. The identification plate shall not be placed in a location where it might be expected to be destroyed or lost in the event of an accident. The identification plate shall contain the data required by § 2.36."

CAR 2.36 as amended on 2 Nov 1949 is below.
§ 2.36Identification. Each article manufactured under the terms of a type or production certificate shall display permanently such data as may be required to show its identity. The data shall include such of the following items as the Administrator finds appropriate:

  1. manufacturer's name,
  2. model designation,
  3. manufacturer's serial number (if article is numbered serially), otherwise date of manufacture, except that articles subject to deterioration as a result of aging (parachutes, parachute flares, etc.) shall bear the date of manufacture in addition to the serial number, if any,
  4. type certificate number,
  5. production certificate number,
  6. capacity or rating.

"Fireproof" is defined as "(1) With respect to materials and parts used to confine fire in a designated fire zone, means the capacity to withstand at least as well as steel in dimensions appropriate for the purpose for which they are used, the heat produced when there is a severe fire of extended duration in that zone; and(2) With respect to other materials and parts, means the capacity to withstand the heat associated with fire at least as well as steel in dimensions appropriate for the purpose for which they are used."

For all PA-18 aircraft
except S/N 1809001 through 1809113 should have identification plates marked as Lock Haven PA with PC 7. All aircraft S/N 1809001 through 1809113 should have Vero Beach FL data plates with PC 206
