Breaks-9S7 Flyin 2021 Edition

2 years ago we had a record number of planes at Heller Bottom. I don’t remember the exact number but for some reason 19 comes up.

Not sure about that, but a few years ago, when a thunderstorm threatened I think we had 21 planes in the hangar. Maybe my math skills were as bad then as now, though....

Mike: We had 19 high-wings (cubs, etc) and a bananza in there....along with half an airplane in one of the storage sheds. That is still the record and hopefully another storm won't make us try to break it. It has been raining steady....even if it stops now, it should be very green by the time of the flyin. Steve....they have a new heater that auto lights....actually it sat on the floor under the old one which threatened to blow us away for several years. Heh, it is Winifred....why hurry, what could an explosion hurt ???? R

Ralph, it's sure a pleasure to hear all the good developments yet still to come to little Winifred. I'll never forget the several trips west in my cub spending wonderful time with the Rogers and experiencing the small town bars and local folks.
Unfortunately I'll not be able to make it this year but wish you and all a safe gathering.
Since losing your home at least you probably still have that TeePee!

We will miss you for sure Old Cuby!!!

Ralph can't wait to be back in town. Missed seeing you last year. Just didn't seem right. Glad things have turned around. See you soon!

The 20 airplanes in the Winifred hangar Ralph spoke of was June of 2014. Here are some pics of that "hangar packing". Also a picture of Ralph and Winifreds benefactor. IMG_5805.jpegIMG_5806.jpegIMG_5807.jpegIMG_1349.jpegIMG_0028.jpegIMG_0029.jpegIMG_0030.jpegIMG_8020.jpeg

2014 that was the year Fedex Lou flew made it thru the storm !! (the big storm) and Gunny almost lost his belly pod.......but that's another story all together, You had to be there! I remember that flyin made a lot of great friends and I may have drank a little whiskey too.

Winifred is a great town with friendly people all around. I had a great Fathers Day weekend there with the some of the locals. certainly an event that you shouldn't miss especially if you never been in that part of the country!

I spent a night in that hangar once, MUCH appreciated. Anyone else notice that steel beam design in the roof? Never seen that before or since, looks like a very trick way to add strength without weight.

Heller bottom. Saturday morning patrol. It looks good. I don't believe we will need to mow it this year.

There is a new strip in the breaks , it is at the mouth of Arrow cr . On the bluff above the river , it is mowed and marked with cones and has 2 wind socks. 12-30 is 1,650’ with a slight rise on 30 and 06-24 is 1000’ it has some small dips and small bumps. It is a privet strip but people are welcome to stop by. 0817E873-6C27-4179-BECD-94B77FCE3F58.jpeg

Heads up folks. The fuel pump at Winifred is inop at the moment. Get fuel before you arrive if needed. They are hoping to have fixed soon.

Thanks, Laura! Lewistown is the nearest gas to Winifred. About 30 nautical miles.

Let's hope the hangar door doesn't go inoperative this year . Big heroics by Ralph, a contractor, and the local REA to get it back up. Everyone seemed to roll with the situation.

Thanks. cubscout

Early arrivals helped with the last-minute chores and we are mostly ready. We had some landings in sporting winds today but things look better for the weekend. Low to moderate winds, temps 70’s and 80’s. Frank has the bar-bq warmed up and the sky is giving spectacular Montana sunsets. 53E73F71-6E58-4068-B5A5-1F57FD40D26E.jpg

Thanks for the videos Eric....I always seem to say 'next year'...

Definitely see a variety of planes.

Met some mighty fine folks that make the annual pilgrimage to the one and only Winifred. Nice to see new faces and new planes. This event definitely has a healthy following. A few smart phone pictures that really can't sum up event. I bailed Saturday hope you had a good last day!
