Tail AD

Pponk bearings, Tanalian leading edge, abrasion boots, paint, reassembly and then can finally wrap this AD fun up... almost there

This one was recently signed off by a very experienced IA stating "Inspected Tailcone and Stabilizer in accordance with AD 2020-21-22 and Cessna S/L SEL-55-01. No corrosion or cracks were found." Amazing how that was done without removing any hardware or paint. :cry:

Is that furthest right rivet and furthest left rivet having some working issues? Looks like they might be moving as it appears to have cracked paint around them.

It is kind of cool, a large fender washer under the nut and it can hide lots of cracks- Never need to remove the tail:x
Sarcasm aside, glad some mechanics realize the need to actually see what is going on and if damage is present.
 
I recently heard a rumor that someone is developing another fix for cracked hockey sticks,
apparently to compete with the QMI repair kit.
Anyone else hear anything about this?

Have heard of several. The QMI kit is patented, so if it is too similar it might run into trouble.

This is the first I've heard of the BVT replacement hockeysticks (made in Australia, "PMA pending"), per supilot's post.
which is the first alternative I've heard of to buying new or used Cessna-manufacture hockey sticks,
or Bushwheel Bill's QMI repair kit.

I don't know any of the other players, I've just heard there are several alternatives - this was the first time I had heard of the BVT one as well.

An outfit in Washington, Bushliner, is making some new replacement brackets that apparently have been found cracked during some inspections,
but other than rumor I'm not aware of any other hockeystick repair kits besides QMI.
 
Note: Installing a custom modified shoulder bushing doesn't help. This one was rotating and galling the bracket and hockey stick. The "highly experienced" A&P/IA who signed off on it might caught it if he had actually inspected it in accordance with the AD/SB. Great idea, but seems that a press fit would have been the answer- freeze it and pop it in, but not be so tight it splits the material it is going into.

Love Bushwheel Bill's answer, seems well thought out and executed.
 
Might have seemed like a good idea but it turned out to be a band aid which exacerbated the problem.

I ordered the QMI kit as I’m about to do my tail inspection. Hopefully I don’t need it. I was going to return it if I don’t need it, but then I noticed in Bill’s video where he says that installing it takes the inspection from a 5 year requirement to 10 year requirement. Is that true? The stuff I read from the feds seems to contradict what he says in the video. Looking for clarification.

Did he obtain an AMOC to the AD? This was discussed on BCP or the club fb page and I thought the answer was no. So, AD trumps STC.

As far as i've heard, this is the case.
The 5 year / 500 hour inspections are still required.
Plus, the ICA for the QMI kit only extends the interval for the first re-inspection.
 
Took the tail off a 185 today due to a bushing used in the co-pilot hockey stick... Big No-No to do because oversizing the attach hole makes for a too small edge distance for the attachment...

The too short bolt used with bushing that was on it... the threaded portion was riding on the inner bracket and wound up damaging that part also... Have a tail section off a 182 we did a tail wheel conversion on that I am able to rob a good inner bracket off of..

I ordered a QMI kit and Bill sent it NDA for me..

QMI installed... Quick and easy relatively speaking... only complaint I have is the drill jig was a PITA to set up.. I wound up grinding a little material out of the inside section of it so it would slip in between the inner bracket and new QMI piece easier..

These are the two sides cut out of the hockey sticks...

Took about 6 hours including complete tear down and reinstall of the tail surfaces to flight status... Next time the aircraft will need the AD inspection is 1500 hours or 10 years.. Then back to 500 hour 5 year inspections..

Considering the owner of this airplane he will probably be due for AD in 4-5 years then about 2-3 years after that... This bird is a worker in a Alaska Lodge, will be on floats in a week or two..

I hope I’m wrong, but my understanding is that the QMI kit doesn’t change the time interval on the AD because the STC’s ICA don’t constitute an AMOC.

That is, the AD time is set by the AD and if you use the QMI kit to comply with the AD, it doesn’t change the time.
 
To me as an IA the QMI time and AD time are irrelevant. With the QMI kit I am not gonna see a reason to remove the stab, most everything else can be seen with the tail on from what I have seen and the part that QMI fixes, I can still see with my borescope post QMI install.
 
So, the tail on our 180 is torn apart. There were no problems found pretaining to the AD or the SB (however, we will install the QMI kit while it is apart prophylactically), but there were a couple of bolts that were next to impossible to get out that required heat, drilling, and hammering - meaning a couple other pieces got messed up in the process (pictures below).

Sure glad I used ACF-50 on mine in 1989. Little messy but no stuck hardware.
 
Atxcruiser, do a new nutplate on the right side of the aft bulkhead now too:)

For sure, prior to finishing this up... getting close... just need tail feathers from paint and can finally move along. Taking them longer than I expected but it is going to be worth it in the end.
