90 deg oi filter adapter install with pics.

All,
just wanted to provide some pics and gouge on the 90 deg oil filter install i just did. My set up is an 0-360 on an experimental PA-12 with mags and old school oil temp sensor. I did not build this aircraft, so I have been slowly making it mine and working within some of the constraints chosen by the builder. At some point I will be installing new baffles and a bigger oil cooler.

-First thing to do was to remove the oil screen housing, Vernatherm and oil temperature sensor.

-Then figure out a way to reroute the top oil cooler line. I had a straight fitting coming out of the engine accessory case. I tried to make an oil line with a 45 deg fitting on one end but there was not enough clearance between the fire sleeve/hose and the actual oil filter.

-I removed the straight fitting from the accessory case and installed a 45 deg fitting. I marked the fitting so I could clock it appropriately.

-Once the new fitting was installed, I was able to figure out the length of the hose. Made the hose with reusable fittings and pressure tested it to 1,200 psig.

-Installed the top oil line.

-Installed the new 90 deg oil filter adapter using a new gasket and sealant (kit came with something that looked like loctite 516 or 518 ). Took my time installing the oil temp sensor (with a new crush washer) as I broke the cable (let all the gas out) last time during an oil change.

-Everything was properly torqued, marked, verified for proper functionality and leaks.

The empty bracket you see on the firewall is for an oil/air separator that I concurrently installed.

I did the same thing, using the Caspar Labs kit. I make my oil change an overnight event. Fly one afternoon, come home and open the sump drain and stab the top outer edge of the filter. Come back the next day, change the filter, refill and fly. Wash rinse repeat... I installed a Vernatherm at the same time and I really liked it for about 18 months until the Vernatherm pooped. I re-installed the viscosity valve and now duct tape is my friend. With a little practice you can tape-to-temp with surprising accuracy.
