My Amish landlord friend where I keep my floatplane spent all summer building his own home. Works a 60 hr week and then came home and built his house. Big deal today, first time having church at his place. I'm really proud and happy for him and his family. Great job Freeman.

Glenn, I can’t tell in the pics but do they unhitch their buggy horses and tie them up in the barn? Looks like a packed driveway! “Stay in the buggy” is what a famous old race horse trainer use to always tell me......
A couple days before they gather at someone's home the enclosed " church wagon" and a couple flatbed steel wheel wagons show up. The church wagon has all the benches and other items. The flat bed wagons get loaded with loose hay for the horse smorgasbord. If you look to the left of the little barn you can see the wagons and horses.

Dave I helped after work when I could. Setting floor joist, flooring and setting trusses. I went down to be his grunt but he made me pound some nails too. Some times it was just better if I stayed out of the way. Was alot of fun.

We have very little snow so far this year.....the good news is...ice is forming good and solid. Last year we had 2 storms around Thanksgiving that dumped 20+ inches each time and many storms after that....made for slushy crappy lake conditions

A couple of years ago I bought some used Trick air skis for my project....I made up some removeable brackets instead of welding permanent ones to my gear. I tested them on my J3 and they work fine....the Trick air's are not stellar in slush and deep snow, but it's nice on the runway and moving in and out of the hangar. I modified the brackets to allow use of my Aero classic 8.50 s after these photos. Don't worry though....I didn't fly my certified Cub with them on

One of the local farmers daughters came home from Idaho to be with her family at Christmas. She teaches at a Christian Academy. She took this awesome snow dog picture late yesterday afternoon of their family farm

after a long search I finally found an airplane with the same or maybe a little less cabin heat than the carbon cub.

Amen. I flew a Stearman from Long Island to Daytona on Election Day, 2000. First fuel stop was Cape May, NJ. I think I waited two hours before I was warm enough to go on. I had 5 Layers on top. Thermal on my legs and heavy jeans. That, and twenty years younger made it almost pleasant. Almost.
Tom, put the skis on and come pick me up. Coldest I flew a Stearman was a frosty 28f morning when my 16B Fleet buddy and I flew the 80 miles down to Rhinebeck. Took my kidneys a couple hrs to stop shivering. Poor Mark in the Fleet left at first light from Syracuse and was a popsicle when he meet me here. Fun stuff.

It was only 24. Old girl wasn’t to happy to be woken from her winter slumber. Ran much better with carb heat on the whole time. I’m told the 220’s run lean anyways and carb heat helps. She leaped off the snow today. Performance was great. This airplane came with a front pit cover. Made all the difference in the world. I’ve been colder in a carbon cub in 40 deg weather.

I use to ride motorcycles. When I did I used a Gerber heated jacket in the winter. It worked so well that I really preferred riding with temps in the 20s as opposed to the upper 80s and 90s. They are very simple to rig up. A plug directly to the battery. Plug in the rheostat from the jacket and go. If I had an open cockpit airplane I would definitely consider one for winter flying...
I stopped by to do some work on another cub in the hangar, the Stearman had a rough mag I had cleaned the plugs and Dave hadn’t ran it sense. We had the hangar door open and we decided to run it. After 20 min warming it up Dave asked if I wanted to fly it. Heck yeah was my answer. I had a sweatshirt and a baseball hat. Threw in my ear plugs and he gave me some gloves.

I flew my StarDuster in 45* weather and only lasted about 15 mins. They say a front cockpit cover is the ticket for cold WX as above. Was going to ski it but just too cold.
Are there skis for a stearman? I can’t recall ever seeing one on skis. Bring it up to the Bowman ski flyin on the 13th, I’ll buy you a hot cocoa.

The old skis I’ve seen in Alaska mostly are made out of plywood with brackets bolted on. You might contact the Air Museum in Anchorage, they may have some or drawings or pictures that they could send you. I’ve seen pic’s of StarDusters on skis, looked like Federal straight skis.

Please send some snow our way. We are desperate. Ground is frozen hard as a rock. Snow West and up North, but not much. Our winter fun (flying, skiing, snowmobiling, etc) needs a shot in the arm in the Penobscot Valley and SpudLand.

The lake has frozen over and the ice gone out three times so far this winter. It doesn't even get solid enough for the birds to walk on it. It's beginning to look like winter is not coming this year.

Oh we tried to freeze some things Dave but didn’t succeed.
