I have a 61 D model that I inhereted, I've been debating on bringing it home to Alaska or just leaving it in Oregon for the rest of the family.
    I guess I'm strange....I like the C and D model.

I really like the wide body. Makes all the difference in the world for comfort. No need to stagger the seats or put your arm around the other person. Just my opinion. Sure wish they had done that with the 180/185.

In our local morning hanger BS session we got to talking about the p&q gross weight increase which is just a piece of paper.
The question came up what FAR prohibits one from operating over gross weight.
I may be wrong but that probably won't stop me from arguing about it.

Well, I know I have been pretty quiet on this thread which is usually pretty rare for me. I have to admit I went down lots of rabbit holes on this one. Had lots of people sending me stuff and realized real fast I could get out of my budget really fast if I let my emotions get the best of me. I found a late 50s model that looked great in the pictures. Lots of previous damage history from when it was new up until 40 years ago. That stuff doesn't always scare me till I read more resent log book entries about replacing loose rivets in several different logbook entries plus I felt like it was way over priced. Cathy and I had finally made the decision to do some work on our house rather than buy another airplane until I got a text from a friend about one out his way that might fit the bill. He and another member here had looked at it, taken some pictures and hooked me up with the owner. He has a strip on his ranch in the Texas panhandle and decided it is time to hang up his spurs. I flew out there on Friday to work on a Super Cub and then we went up and checked out this 182A with a Texas Skyways 520 conversion. It is a ranch plane and the exterior and interior kinda match the same motif as my Super Cub but the mechanicals are amazing. I have always been a function over form kind of guy. Besides the upgraded engine and prop it has a carbon fiber Silkirks cowl, recent fuel bladder, and the entire tail was removed, new jack screws, bushings and all new control cables installed. New nose strut, nose wheel, has Cleveland brakes along with a skyBeacon ADS-B unit with KT76A transponder, KX155 Nav/Com with indicator and an EI single cylinder EGT gauge. We flew it and even at 4K ft field elevation it jumped off the ground and climbed like a home sick angel. The owner claims 160 mph, I saw 145 kts on 600x6 tires with wheel pants on the mains. The asking price was more than fair, never advertised and I bought it. Since I was in my Super Cub and the money got wired at 3 pm and won't be there till Monday I have to go back this next week and pick it up.

They say when in Rome do as the Romans do, luckily Kevin showed me the way and we had a blast in the Palo Duro Canyon Saturday morning. After flying home I have spent last night and today going over logs, receipts and every scrap of paper saved in the two big satchels of paperwork. So far I am pretty happy. Can't wait to bring it home and start on the short list, BAS harnesses and some sort of engine monitor to see what is going on with that 200 hr engine. Thanks to everyone for the advice, and comments here and the many texts and emails. I greatly appreciate all the help and have learned a lot already. I am sure that will continue.

Not even. That is my sanity device. The 182 will be Cathy's magic carpet. I have no issue crossing the country at 90 mph and 50 ft.

You weren't looking in the rear view mirror and seeing the look on her face on the way home from Arkansas getting beat up at 70 mph. She won't do like Laura and fly from the front so I can sleep. I will admit the speed will be nice but then I miss out on playing once I get there.

Those early models don't really need an interior. I would ditch it. StewartB's interior style is nice if you want something in there.

Assuming that is the carb'd 520 from TX Skyways, mind the carb ice. I had that engine in my C180, once got carb ice at full power over San Antonio (at 12,500 or something).

That’s the panhandle you’re smelling. Barn, mice, dust, feedyard, etc. Hard to wash off. Pretty soon it’ll grow on you and you’ll want to move up here to gods country so you can smell it everyday

Kinda like going to the oil refinery my grandfather worked at. I thought it stunk and he thought it smelled like perfume.

Tried posting this from my tablet last night with no joy. Puter today. Nothing special but not butchered and love the teal yokes from back in the day.

Ya well, tell him a P-38 and a Twin Otter both have nosewheels but he probably wouldnt want to fly either of those airplanes.

When he was little we watched a Volpar converted Beech 18 land at our airport and when I asked him about going to look at it he wasn't interested, said it had a nose wheel. I jaded him when he was little. He will come to appreciate it when we can go to some of the places he wants to go.
