Need help with aircraft ID on Washington Island, WI

An old pilot training classmate sent me this trying to find out what type of plane his grandfather was in. His grandpa told him the story 20+ years ago when in his 90s. He and a cousin flew up to Washington Island in his cousins plane for a fly in. While there, a military pilot gave him a ride in one of the biplanes in the picture.

Going thru his folks stuff he found the newspaper clipping and picture of his grandpa that corroborated the story he was told years ago.

Thanks,

Jake

The Robin's elevators are squared off not rounded in the pics I seen. He He who knows. But I have flown to Washington Island WI. in a J-3 in 1964 as a passenger.
