What is everybody using on light planes like PA11s, Rans S7s, etc. How do Desser 8:50/6 work compared to 26 Airstreaks?

I would expect the Rans and similar craft are all on shaved ATV or UTV tires. Not sure there is anyway they would be eligible on a Cert plane.

30 yrs ago maybe. I dont know of anyone running shaved ATV tires anymore. The dessers or nanco tires seem to be the go to for those on a tight budget.

Airstreaks, the bigger the better! Meaning 26 or 29".

I keep lobbying, complaining that they don't anyway, that AA make 31's in the Airstreak version. Sure I could buy the current 31's, but they are built for heavier gross weight planes so would have less sidewall flex and I'd just be hauling around a lot of extra rubber. They would sell a boatload of Airstreak 31's, I guarantee it. At least I would buy a pair.

Is that so Fred. Flintstone. “All on shaved ATV or UTV tires.” 

Yes it is so,

The Nanco tires are utility tires that are also used on light aircraft but not originally designed for aircraft.

Clearly not "all" but any owners that are using Nanco are using tires designed for a utility vehicle.

I’ve used 8.50s, 26” and 29” Airstreaks between the two Taylorcrafts I have owned. The 29” streaks are by far the best. If you’re going anywhere resembling a runway you will be just fine on 8.50s, I’ve even landed on beaches with 8.50s just fine.

PA-11, Desser 8:50’s, McArthur River last summer.... When I lived up there, like I said on another thread, 8:50’s were the big tires. If I lived up there now, I’d have something a little bigger.

I did the same progression on my S-7S, and don't recall any added drag hit (though it must be there) between the 26's and the 29's, but a substantial amount of added "cushiness". This makes me want 31" Airstreaks, damn it.

When I found out AA made a even lighter version of the Airstreak line of tires, 12 pounds per pair lighter, and for my 1320 gross, I bought a pair last fall, after selling my 29's (1700 hours) for 1 K. they are an inch shorter for some reason, which I try and ignore. Nice and cushy though, and they seem to have less rolling resistance at my usual 4 lbs or so PSI when I push it out of the hangar. I recently found out they have discontinued producing them, something about them being fine for the European market but not up to the rigors of our stateside use, I heard this third hand so may have that wrong. So far so good and the weight loss is always welcome, but I do have mixed feelings about buying them right before they quit making them, (like being the last buyer of an Edsel) a bit unsettling but so far so good. The rocks in this pic are embedded and sharp, and I did take some care when I got turned around.

This was the first site I landed when I got the new lightweights, before I heard about them not being made anymore, hmmmm:roll:.
Wrong pic, can't figure out how to delete it.
