NE Summer Fun 2020

Actually I was in fact looking for a place I could land to visit a friend, thanks good to have the go ahead.
Are you flying?

Remember back in June when mommy snappers were being sighted? The replacements are on there way, Today we have some little ones making their way to our pond. We have seen three so far.

Two more little turtles were passing through my work area on the other end of the house earlier today. The hole they exit from their nest is cleaned out quite a bit over the past few days as well. I am glad curiosity did not get the best of me to did it up. I had been discussing taking a look just a few days back.

I found one yesterday no more than an inch in diameter. I put it in my pocket to give my wife as she used to have baby turtle pets when she was a kid. I forgot all about it until this morning. The turtle was gone, where I do not know. It may be in the house or it could have fallen out when I was helping a visitor with his Ex Carbon Cub on Clarmar amphibs turn around.

For those who may wonder, the floats looked to be a perfect match for the Cub with ample buoyancy and good take off performance. The drawback is there is not much clearance between the keels and the ground. They got hung up on a very small bump transitioning from the concrete ramp to the grass.

The added engines are interesting, not sure I had seen that in the past. Probably real handy when water taxiing.

But the boats being slung transom first, must be the additional drag is less the issue than the downforce at the bow of the hulls if they faced forward.

There is more drag with the flat transom aft. A vacuum develops behind the square stern (floppy back extensions on the back of some tractor trailers) and mud on the back of your SUV. Also drafting of race cars and tractors following each other so closely.

I was taught flat transom forward Never found drag an issue but most large external loads were on a Beaver Weight on one side never was an issue nor was upward force if there is any. Large boats were flown with transom forward with the side on a float and the bottom horizontally facing outward. I flew a four wheeler trailer on a Beaver once which was flat on front and back. More turbulence than anything else I’ve flown, which effected the tail somewhat and did cause some vibration. I would take the wheels off a four wheeler so there was no flex to effect tightness on straps or lines and set the four wheeler on a piece of plywood cut to fit so as not to damage the float.

I did find significant drag with a large set of moose horns tied on super cub lift struts just outboard of but attached to the jury struts. It required significant right rudder to fly straight.

Brought FMD from the wad to China to pick up his cub. He greased the grass landing at the wad and even got to fly it on wheels today. One down one to go.

We are looking at a fly-in gravel bar lunch this Sat. Or Sunday depending on the WX. Matt has a landing area marked on a bar in the river just north of the Northville bridge. I’ll post more in a day or two. Matt said he will provide the food, told him to be careful with free food and Pilots, lol.

First annual Sacandaga flying. Water is real low, landing areas everywhereIMG_20201108_102205.jpegIMG_20201108_105920.jpegIMG_20201108_105014.jpegIMG_20201108_104959.jpeg
