Found it. I opened up the regulator and the points on the coil with the heavy windings were burned and overheated. I could not get a regulatr today so I cleaned them up and realigned them and set the gap. I reassembled and repolarized the generator. I need a new one but after this "repair" I did a test flight. It is charging but the amp meter is really twitchy between 0 and 15 amps, definitely not stable. Any ideas? I dont want to put in a new regulator and fry it too.
Best match I saw at NAPA was ECH VR122. Looks exactly the same down to the last detail. They could not cross the number per se.
True. I think I will run this generator one more time and next time switch to an alternator. Just spent a grand on LED position lights, need to heal up!
