Thought I'd share the start of our rebuild. This SC has been in the family for a few decades and it's finally time for a full restoration. Checked empty wt and made some measurements a couple weeks ago.
Got the wings ready to pull yesterday. Hope to get them off tomorrow. Coming along nicely.20200212_120522.jpeg20200212_113921.jpeg20191215_155438.jpeg20200212_141427.jpeg20200316_142937.jpeg20200316_112128.jpeg20200316_152914.jpeg20200316_165210.jpeg

I think I recognize that hangar, what airport are you based at? My folks live in Germantown and base their Clipper and Vagabond at Colonial. They are here in Texas right now doing some recover and paint on the wings of the Clipper.

Hey Steve, you are correct. We are at Colonial. We had been at Holly Springs and Kevin moved the RV up to Baker so we moved a few months ago.

Looks like you have a 105 Special converted to an O-320 with flaps? What is your punch list during the rebuild?

It's not actually a 105 special. Someone in its history put that on the registration and they won't let me change it. It is a 105 but was converted to an 0290/135hp back in the 60s. It was ordered with flaps, balanced elevators, RH wing tank, as well as an electrical system. Yellow and brown paint. This would've been the colors.FullSizeRender%202.jpeg

I am in Graham, Texas but visit my folks there several times a year. Will give you a heads up next time I am there.

Great idea to document everything with pictures. I did my t-craft many moons ago and enjoy looking at the photo album today even though I sold the plane many years ago. Plus, they are a BIG help when it comes to putting things back together!

Rich.

Looks like a nice project .
Ive got its sister ship.
N7236K , also converted to 135 hp waiting for a complete restoration. Pretty sure yours will be done before i start mine.

That's cool, would love to see some pics of yours. I'm hoping ours will be done in 4 years. We want it finished so our oldest can solo in it on his 16th birthday. Time will tell. So far today everything came apart much easier than expected. I'll psst today's progress in a sec.

When I find the original pic of 7158K that a previous owner sent me I will post it. It got changed to a Special by a previous registrant also. I don’t even agree with the 105 part, the data plate is stamped PA-18. Jim

The empty wt was 1013#. About 50lbs over the W&B in the book but the CG was exactly the same. From what I can tell it wasn't weighed after the razorback was put on the fuselage so that would definitely add some wt. Probably quite a bit of trash, oil and missing hardware in the belly as well. Good to see a K-Series Cub being rejuvenated! A few years ago we completed the rebuild of the K-Series Super Cub my grandfather bought in 1965. They are great airplanes. Looks like yours was the same setup as ours except ours originally had no electric. Now it has electric, two wing tanks and a 150HP.

Strangely enough, I just rented hangar space at Colonial. I'm in the process of buying a Stinson 108 to keep there, which COVID has delayed. I need to meet everyone else at the field.

I talked to Brad the other day and he said you're going into the big community hangar. If you're interested Eric is moving his PA16 up to Baker and vacating his spot in the T-hangars next to Brad's 140. You probably already knew that but wanted to let you know if not.

Thanks! I didn’t know. I’ll have to call and chat with Brad. Now I just need to get the airplane to put in there!

A little more progress this week. Got all the fabric off the tail surfaces. Now to finish cleanup, inspect, repair and prime. 20200404_163014.jpeg20200404_170626.jpeg20200404_174327.jpeg20200404_174633.jpeg
