Post Crash Survival

SJ and I took the cub down to Bentonville, AR this weekend for a post crash survival course taught my Missy Martin and Scott Smith along with two of their SEREs instructor buddies, Brennan and Jerrod. Initially we were in a classroom setting but then we went out into the woods to put some of this stuff to practical use. It was eye opening and humbling! I always remember Bill Rusk saying that anything on you is survival gear and everything else in your plane is camping gear...meaning you cant count on having access to it in an emergency. In each of the practical sessions we were given a small zip lock back of supplies and read a scenario of our situation and we had to manage with what we had and what we could find. It was instantly evident that we need to ramp up our on person gear. The scenarios ranged from needing shelter and signaling to managing certain types of injuries. We learned a lot but mostly learned how much more we need to learn. We greatly appreciate these folks and the folks at OZ1 Flying club for sponsoring the event as well as Chip and Dave for all of their support over the weekend.

Different type of shelter with tarps .

We did get to go out and play for a bit too. I will try to upload so short videos. They are just with my phone and not great quality....but it definitely gives you a feel for what the flying is like in the area. Stunning terrain with crystal clear rivers....and awesome strips. Some that are quite challenging.

Some of the best training I've ever been through was the Air Force Arctic Survival Training, at Eielson AFB.

The saying "Survival Gear is what's in your pockets when you go out the door. That stuff in the baggage compartment is camping gear, not survival gear." was one of Ray Tremblay's sayings, and so true.

Ray was a trapper, a game warden and a pilot.

Scott leaving Trigger Gag

SJ landing at McCallister Airpark....video really doesn't do it justice....and the landing wasn't a hard landing but we did hit a good bump after touchdown.

Chip leaving Banks Ranch. 600' uphill landing....wish I could have caught it. We were just too far out....so I caught the departure. Lot's of awesome flying in the area. Banks has, I think, 4 strips. Pretty cool area. Worth the trip from anywhere!!!
