My brother has a Cherokee 140 with the 150 hp E2A and has a chance to buy a low time first run 160 hp D1A that came out of a RV. It looks like the dynafocal mounts are different between the two but wondering if anybody knows of an STC to make the change? Thanks for any ideas.

Marty, This from the Type Certificate data sheet E-274 for the engine: https://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgMakeModel.nsf/Frameset?OpenPage

Note:5 O-320-E1A, -E2A Same as O-320-D1A and -D2A respectively, except have lower compression ratio andperformance.

Compare serial numbers on your brother's Cherokee with the TC data sheet 2A13.

It is possible that there is some overlap of the serial numbers so that the engine can be installed as a minor alteration. No STC required.

The Type Certificate Data Sheet on the Lycoming O-320 gives you all the differences in all the different models. So you can take an engine out of an experimental and install in a certified airplane?

It would be up to the installer to determine the airworthiness (meets type design and safe for flight) of the engine he is installing. It would depend on the records on the engine. Was work done by an A&P or repair station, were eligible parts used, and the list goes on. I’ve had cases where the records were good and I installed the engine that came out of a home built as is. I’ve had others where I told the owner to send it off to an overhaul facility or I would overhaul it prior to installation. More times than not, they were looking for the “cheap solution, so they went someplace else for the installation (and all subsequent annuals).

Art Mattson was a big Cherokee guy, he had an STC to bump the 320 E2A/E2D (?) up to 160 hp.
Might be an easier way to go paperwork wise for your bro.
Mattson passed away a few years ago but another outfit acquired his STC's.
