Charlie’s Super Cub project

I am curious how the 3rd seat adds 8 lbs. It is two tubes under the floor. I don't ever install the seat belt lugs because the owners just want the heavier capacity baggage floor.

Did you look under the U channel in front of the right D window. Everything can look fine and that tube can be like swiss cheese behind that channel.

And I’d add the tail clean out too. Really handy when rigging the airplane and working on it down the road

i don’t know, that’s what Karen said. I haven’t gotten the STC yet due to the mail from Anchorage. I’ll take a look at it when it gets here.

It looked pretty clean to me. Larry the ”welder” is impressed how clean the fuselage is. He’s been doing a lot of Super Cub fuselages lately. I’ll double check it when I bring the H brace over.

The right side has a U channel welded around the tube with no way for moisture from the 4 PK screws that hold the D window in to escape.

The left side just has a channel butted up to it so the whole tube is exposed.

I’ll talk it over with my welder. Why does the right side have issues and not the left Steve?

Piper welded that piece on before the fuselage was primed, and welded the bottom. Then they drilled holes for pk screws to hold the interior panel on that holds the window in

My cub lived out west it’s whole life. Was recovered once in the 70’s. That was the only rusted tube I had to replace. I took off all the other channel pieces and primed the tube and channel. All around the door and under the left window. They weren’t as bad but they were rusting

Pull off that sheet metal channel, Charlie. It's just a couple hours work if it's all right underneath. Then clean and re-prime with weld-thru zinc primer. It Could be a big deal if ignored.

I am getting ready to start on the wings. Set up my Wag Aero wing rotator. One of the few things I like from them.

Who has the best bang for the buck on leading edge skins? I am going to replace them all.

Leaning towards Dakota Cub 23 gallon fuel tanks and delete the header tanks.

I always use univairs blank leading edges and cut them to fit. But that more because they are available at Stoddards locally... and made from .020” 2024T3

I think Dakota is softer? And thicker??

I just got the STC from Karen. The installed weight is 2.5 lbs. The kit Borer used to send which included the tubes and floorboard was 8 lbs. that’s where the confusion was. I am going to go ahead and install it.

If you install the seat belt tabs, tack weld a nut, on the outboard side of the tab, over the hole for the seat belt bolt. Makes it easier to install/remove the belts in the future.

I decided not to do the weld on float fittings. I am not float rated and am not planning on putting it on floats. Plus it adds weight. Not sure if I am going to do the third seat as it adds 8 lbs. I am doing the H brace in the tail as part of the Tost tow hook installation. Still debating the gross weight increase STC. It’s expensive and I don’t really need it for my mission.

There’s no way I’d do this much work to a Cub rebuild and NOT install the gross weight STC.

I am still considering it.

On another note. After a good hard look at the wings I am going to do some level of rebuild. Didn’t notice when I bought the project that there’s biplane N strut fittings attached to the spar. I don’t really have a problem with them but the spar isn’t as clean as I would like and a lot of the ribs are beat up from hangar rash.

Sooo I was looking at Dakota Cubs website. I am thinking doing stock wings with their ribs and new spars using my old fittings. The squared off, extended wings with slots are very tempting! If I did them I would definitely do the gross weight increase. Does anyone know what the squared off wings do to the climb rate?

The biplane N strut attach fittings are free to anyone who wants them FYI.

They attach right below the wing strut attach fittings.

What cam followers are you using? $600 for new Lycoming DLC units seems like good insurance to me after replacing several cams.

I didn’t send them out. I was waiting to see if the cam was airworthy. Good call on the DLC! Where’s the best place to get them Aircraft Specialties?

My welder was like, “Charlie why didn’t you have your fuselage blasted? It makes my job easier.”
So I just got the fuselage back from the sandblaster. They did a pretty good job with it! It didn’t reveal anything I didn’t already know but it’ll make for a cleaner look when I paint it.
