Charlie’s Super Cub project

The big baggage door is a must.

http://performanceairmotive.com/doors.html

I welded some tabs and made a light weight upper baggage, used fabric on the sides and light carbon floor. Carbon concepts door. Works great for sleeping bags pillows etc. With the big lower baggage door I can get inside enough to reach the back of the lower baggage.

Last couple feet of the fuselage put a clean out. You’ll be happy if you ever have to do any work back there. It’s great when you go to put the control cables on.

The big baggage door and extended baggage are great to have when it comes to long trips. You should be able to convert to 160 hp but would need longer case studs for the banana plates and cylinders so when you send the cases out to be inspected have them pressed in at that time. I would avoid moving the oil cooler to rear baffle if possible and add a seaplane lip if you don't have one already, you are going to make more heat with the increased compression.

I have a wide deck so hold down (banana) plates are not required.

I am not sure what I want to do on the oil cooler. I am leaning towards putting it on the back of the baffles.

Got the fuselage pretty well stripped down. As soon as the STC’s are here I’ll haul it to my welder. Lot more work stripping one down then I remember. Respect to guys like Steve Pierce and Mike S. that do this for a living!

Got my first box of STC mods from CubCrafters. Extended baggage, baggage door and aluminum headliner. Missing some paperwork but Vera got right on it. Pleased with the quality except for one minor irritation. When they bent up the headliner they removed the protective plastic from the aluminum and it’s pretty scratched up. I’ll clean it up before paint but would’ve preferred they left it on like they did with the extended baggage kit.

Has the fuselage been blasted Recently? It’s the best way to find corrosion and you are 95% there hate to see you miss a golden opportunity to do it right/

Yes because it purely SUCKS to do all the mods and then blast it and have to replace most of the belly tubes and others because somewhere in its life it had been sunk. I got the hat. They all go to the blaster FIRST......

Normally I would have it media blasted. The reason I am probably not going to is the fuselage is very low time and pristine with one very minor repair. It’s been sitting in some guys West Virginia shop for fortyish years. He was a total amateur on putting things back together but that’s not an issue to me.

Got my second batch of STC mods. Mostly Atlee stuff but I bought it through Univair to save on shipping. Front to back- overhead X-brace, seat belt attach kit, removable rear seat cross bar, under seat battery, belly pan clean out, heavy duty brake reinforcing channel and Bella.

That alone would convince me to bead blast it.

Web

I just talked to the intermediate owner who had the project about a year. He said when he picked it up it was in a heated garage. I am going to talk it over with my welder who is an old-time Waco rebuilder.

You ever planning on selling it? It will be big for resale if you blast it. I think your crazy not to. Do all that work on a questionable fuselage seems insane.

i don’t plan on selling it but you know how it goes. I am getting a quote from the sand blaster company across the street from me.

I'm curious about what they quote you $ wise. I'm in the process of welding up a new cub from VR3 and would like to know about what to expect.

Fuselage ready to go to the welder. What could possibly go wrong....

I decided not to do the weld on float fittings. I am not float rated and am not planning on putting it on floats. Plus it adds weight. Not sure if I am going to do the third seat as it adds 8 lbs. I am doing the H brace in the tail as part of the Tost tow hook installation. Still debating the gross weight increase STC. It’s expensive and I don’t really need it for my mission.

I want to be just like my welder when I grow up!
