Trick Air Ski Plane fly-in at Jackson Seaplane Base McGregor, MN Saturday January 25th, 2020

Paul Jackson

PATRON
MN
The 5th Annual is on the calendar. Come one come all and dress for the elements....

We are hoping for better weather this year than last. The MSP area was IFR most of the day and we only made it to about 10 degrees.

Little different set up this year. I am moving most everything to the lake and will have fire, food and beverages there. We will plow a runway again for our wheeled friends and drag a good ski plane surface. Door prizes as usual and we will cater Horseshoe Lake Inn for a lunch menu. (As always food is compliments of Trick Air Skis)

If you are looking to come up on Friday and/or stay over on Saturday Big Sandy Lodge is the next lake over. There is a vintage snowmobile event in the area so call early.

Here is a link to them:

https://www.bigsandylodgeandresort.com/ their phone is 218-426-5040

We will have snow and runway information as we get closer to the date. Not much ice yet, but we just got about 14 inches at the base and it should start making more ice with colder temps this week.

Mogas is available on the lake at Horseshoe Lake Inn on the northeast corner of the lake.

For advanced planning we are MN61 and we are about 8 miles NE of KHZX which has 100LL and tie downs.

More news to come......

Updates:

We have a good chance of the lake setting up for operations by the 25th. I was there today (1/12) and we are close with a decent layer of ice over a thinning layer of slush. The long range forecast looks good with a typical high around 20 and a low of a few below in the area for the day. Dress warm as we are moving everything to the lake this year and will have some fires to warm the bones.

It looks like it will be ice and patchy snow on the lake so please land and taxi with caution. We will sand the parking areas for the wheeled guys and possibly try to get some sand on the runway morning of. With the light snow cover on the lake we might not need to plow, so look for runway markings with the ski runway in its usual spot to the south of the main runway.

Food is being ordered this week and we are getting the first of the door prizes in.

Update Monday 1/20

Visited the lake today and took several auger holes where the runway is to be located. Great news. The ice has set up and there is no longer a slush layer to be found. We drilled several holes and the ice looked great with minimum of 16 inches and a maximum depth of 24 inches. There is about a foot of fresh powder on the surface which should plow nicely if we can get to it before the warm up this week. We are forecasting a chance of a dusting of snow this week but nothing that would likely require another plow call out.

I hired a plow to hit it the lake Tuesday and get the ice runway, taxiway and a large parking area plowed while the snow is powder.

Ice pics and updates here: http://trickair.com/flyin

Forecast for the week looks like low IFR thru Thursday and I am hoping that the ceilings come up as the moisture and low pressure move off to the east. I will keep an eye on the forecast and update here. Here is the Weather.com look at the end of the week.

Smoked pork butt (pulled) sandwiches
Smoked corn chowder

We will be ready to accept arrivals after first light. We will have fires outside (away from aircraft areas) to warm up.

Happy hour and dinner at the Horseshoe Inn on Friday night. All are welcome to attend. We have ramp space available for overnight aircraft with plug ins. The Jackson family cabin is full up but Big Sandy Lodge is just up the road.

I haven't uploaded everything yet, but here are a few shots:

Following Hwy 210 east. Freezing mist 2k and above so staying low kept the windscreen clean.
