Does your C180 cylinder baffle look like this?

#5 is my hottest cylinder - not by a lot, but enough that that is the one I focus on. The oil cooler is of course in front of it, and the extra little baffle on top. Does everybody else have that extra little baffle? It's a PPonk if that matters..

Mine are very Oat sensitive. I usually keep the cylinders under 350, but at the expense of higher fuel burn in the summer.

Airplanes IO520 conversion, on 180K, baffles installed by them.

Unless I’m up high running peak #4 is hottest then it’s no. 5.

Yesterday, coming back from Colorado at 11.5 / -1 OAT and running peak I had 1435 peak EGT and 345 CHT with 185 oil temp (Gill vent covers on) with all cylinders within 30 degrees EGT and 50 CHT

#5 cylinder baffle is part #1250134-1 or -2 for serial numbers 18502311 thru 18502392 and 18502825 and up respectively. I don't see such a part for the 180 but I didn't look very hard.

I put mine on after Steve Knopp told me it would be a good idea since 185s use it. I didn't have a monitor back then. Now that I do I see no reason to change anything.

I have a nose bowl like yours and my 470 cylinder looks like Kirby's. Looks like your engine is sagging a bit judging from the spinner and cowl position.

Might want to check your motor mounts, appears your engine is sagging some. Could be somewhat disrupting the air flow for proper cooling.

sj, There is supposed to be a narrow baffle which goes between the oil cooler and the cylinder. Do you have one installed?

Yes, I have one installed, I was wondering if I was supposed. BTW, I have the anti-thrustline mod. That is why it looks like the engine is sagging... :p I'll have Pierce check his photo archive of when the engine was put in for comparison.

sj,
I seem to recall there should be a large thick washer between the engine mount and the firewall at the lower bolts. I'd have to check the manual.

These are shots from the 2010 WAD, soon after the engine install (with rebuilt or new motor mount). Looks like the cowling has never lined up quite right with the spinner.

It's a 520 case, not sure if it matters, I do think we used the original mount but would need to check the logs.

My #2 and #5 run the hottest. I also have that baffle on top of the #5 cylinder - I installed it when I did the IO470 upgrade.

It is the original engine mount with the orginal engine mount legs off the O-470 installed on the O-520 crancase used in the P-Ponk conversion. Baffles were new from Airforms with some tweaks recommended by Steve Knopp. I don't think the engine ever fit exactly in the center of the opening. This is when installed in 2008.

Pete is referring to these washers I think.

I remember the fun you had replacing that gascolator...

Thanks!

I think I have a pretty similar setup SJ, but I don’t have that extra little baffle. Did airforms as well, with no modifications required minus blocking off a couple port holes not used on our early model configurations. Not sure why uploading from my iPhone rotated the pictures. 1955 180.

Oh that one is easy to get to. The one in the 206 is way up under the nose strut.

520 in my 206 has that baffle in place. 550 in other 206 that I know of is missing that baffle. 550N in columbia does not have it. 470 in 1976 182 does not have it.

Mine is similar, except with a stock 470K.
I had to repair a crack in the engine mount a couple years ago,
the Lord rubbers were sagging in the extreme so I replaced them.
I'm expecting to need to do an engine overhaul before too many more years go by,
at which time I'm planning on installing a later model mount which uses the horizontal-ish rubbers.
I think they hold up a lot better, plus based on an old service letter (SL180-1) I hope that arrangement will be a lot smoother.

FWIW from the photos, SJ, it kinda looks like your engine might be sagging down a bit lower now,
compared to Steve Pierce's photo from 2008 in post #8.

No, it was on this plane - and it was a while after. would not want to make it easy with the engine off an all...
This is how I can tell how long ago things were now. He is bigger and taller than me. I miss that kid running around the hanger getting into stuff.

Log book time and Lee Pierce growth rings, do not always appear to coincide.

This is a very common problem, and best fix is to use the Martin Aviation replacement baffle, ~$500. This cools #5 and #3. Call them for details 318-574-5855

To elaborate a bit on my thread drift:
