Happy to report that hunting season has officially started for 2019 - at least for me. Wanted to get the thread started and share a story.
Was fortunate enough to take this 5x5 in New Mexico on Wednesday - all solo, even the selfie. This bull was a satellite to a much bigger herd bull, which I got to see when I was making my 4th pack trip out the next morning. The bull I shot had cut a cow out from the herd and was trailer her, when he passed 20 yards from me. Got him to stop with a cow call and made a clean pass through lung shot. Stopped him again after the shot with some cow calling, he stood for 20 or 30 seconds, which gave me the opportunity to confirm the shot placement. I then waited the eternity of 30 minutes before trailing. Found him 250 yards from where he was shot. Animal recovered - SUCCESS!
Reality sets in about now, realizing its about 1 1/2 miles to the closest road. I know that's not far, by Alaska standards, but needless to say there was lots of work involved in getting this guy processed, on my back, and in the freezer - again all solo. Really was a rewarding experience, even after 30+ years of hunting. For those of you with some experience in the area, would like to hear about what game bags you are using.
Somewhat aviation related:
Wife: "Can you get the 4 Wheeler to him?"
Me: "Nope, maybe a helicopter"
Wife: "Ha ha. Is this an excuse to own one?"
That looks like a green light to me:lol:
Looking forward to hearing some of the hunting stories from others on the forum this year.
