J-3 Fuel Tank Install

I just purchased a J-3 that had the fuel tank removed. A new tank was included in the deal, but not installed. Any idea what mods I need to do on my arms to get the thing installed?

I assume the two removable tubes are out? After that it is simply a real bitch that takes some patience and skin loss. Put the tank strips in very loosely and work the tank into them before tightening them up. Will take an hour of so and the next time (hope not eh?) will go a little easier. But not much. It's not that bad, really, but go slowly and don't force anything.

The tubes have been removed, just having difficulty getting it into front straps and filler neck out through cowling. do the straps (top and bottom) get bolted together or are they separated by the tube the bolt runs through?

Go over to the J3 Cub forum and search. All of mine have the straps split and bent on the bottom. Tank goes up, straps rotated in place, 10-32 threaded rods pull the straps together - ten minutes. Not my original idea - my personal Cub came that way in 1962.

Together, but many have been modified by now to make it easier. Often times made so that they can be brought together at the bottom. As long is it is secure, make it work for you.

I am installing my tank and am having problems with the straps not fitting correctly. Do you have any pictures how the clamps look after tightened on the tank? I am restoring this plane and have complete access and boot cowl is off.

If you split them on the bottom you can make them fit. I believe both straps rest on top of the frame, at least originally - they apparently put the straps on, then dropped the tank in, then put the boot cowl on. You can see how difficult that made removal.

The originals had 1/4" thick felt between straps and tank. And remember - front and back straps are different.

J3 fuel tank straps

My tubes would not come out so I removed the boot cowl. The flange on both straps go on top of the bushing that is welded to the frame. The MS35207-271 screws are held to the top strap with a AN 315 jam nut and at the bottom of the bushing with 2 nuts.
