Anyone know when piper started using metal spars on j3 ?

Sounds about right from sitting in on 20+ years over seminars at Lock Haven. 15 years or so ago one of the old time IAs at one of the seminars thinks that he had worked on the last wood spared Cubs built. One wing had 2 or 3 splices and the other had 6 splices and the spar had been signed by 5 or 6 Piper employees.

I recovered a set of wings dated 1937 or 1938 where all the splices were signed and dated so I would think that practice preceeded the last one.
