2019 Big Tires and Campfires Week

Folks I have been a little slow on getting official information out about the 2019 Big Tires and Campfires week (Spearfish, Missouri Breaks, and Johnson Creek Fly Ins) as it is still coming together. Dates are set, I am waiting on details from IDT and some other people, so your patience is appreciated!

Here is what I do know now:
    • Spearfish Overnight - Thursday June 6
    • Missouri Breaks - Friday June 7 - Sunday June 9
    • NO OFFICIAL JOHNSON CREEK FLY IN THIS YEAR DUE TO IDAHO DEPARTMENT OF AVIATION
    • IAF Big Tires Raffle - Saturday June 15 @ Big Creek Get your tickets here: raffle

Just a little update, folks! I'm waiting for information from the Idaho Department of Aviation, who is also talking with the USFS about their fly in rules and regs this year. I am supposed to hear something this week.

    Thanks

Head over to Peter Brown's, he should have a nice one you can fly off with by then. He stated he is getting rid of assets- help him out

I am taking my Maule, but you should grab the 180 and head over. Might cost less to grab the Kerosene Crummy to McCall and get picked up.

Kirby, Just show up in Yakima on Friday night, load her up and get her home by midnight Sunday... Or maybe Lou will babysit you?

Thank you SJ and Windy for doing the leg work. Going to be fun.

My friend is flying down from Alaska with me to get me back current on instruments, but don't know if he is staying the weekend. But, Mauly has four seats, and high performance, so we could continue or finish your HP check out.

Ok folks, I have received the info from Idaho Department of Transportation / Aviation and the regs for the fly in will be much like last year. The forest services adds this comment:

The Forest Service manages and maintains Dewey Moore, Mile Hi, Simonds and Vines homestead sites for emergency use and discourages public use as written in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Plan.
These places are not FAA recognized airstrips, do not meet standards for public use airstrips and are hazardous and non-emergency use is strongly discouraged.
The Forest Service takes pride in the backcountry aviation opportunity it provides in Central Idaho and encourages aircraft use on the 8 public use airfields in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness and many others surrounding the Wilderness in the Idaho Backcountry.

Every time something happens at one of these airstrips - which it did last year (although not during our event) - it puts more pressure on these organizations to discourage events like the Johnson Creek Fly in that has been held for many years. There are seventy some airstrips that ARE open within easy shot of JC. If your bucket list absolutely includes these four airstrips, please come out and do it at a time when there are not so many airplanes in the backcountry as there are during this event.

What you are saying, if I hear you correctly: Don't fly over the house, and don't listen to Uncle Eaton?

    Got it.

Chip, if you join us, you know the rules- follow SJ and do not have a misfiring engine and have to land anywhere not on the chart.

Looking forward to that weekend, when can I register?

I'm planning on Johnson Creek. Count me in for that one. Makin' babies will preclude me from the Missouri Breaks, though.

I am still hammering out details on costs and need to do a quick survey for folks with a few questions, but yes, it will be soon - hopefully in the next couple weeks.

I also am going to need a "Safety Liaison" again this year - somebody who will be at the event who can help folks understand and abide by the safe operational requirements of the event. There is no badge or gun that goes with this position. If too many people volunteer, we will have to have a special election.

Speaking of guns there is some clarification on the firearms policy (not mine, Idaho's) that I will publish with all the other stuff you need to read in a couple weeks.

The raffle this year is totally in the hands of the Idaho Aviation Foundation, they will be publishing a link soon I suspect!

    That is all for now.

Sounding like an event Uncle Eaton would host now...

(Sorry for the liberty SJ, I do look forward to the rules, as Alaska planes often need firearms in them.

    Here is my safety briefing

    1. If you are landing and see someone on the runway carrying beer to the campground. DO NOT run over them.
    2. DO NOT hit the house.
    3. DO NOT report me on Mile Hi, or Dewey Moore, I will be checking my oil.
    4. Everybody fly to Sulfur Creek for breakfast, thatíll give me hours of time in the air with nobody around.
    5. DO NOT mistakenly land at the private strip next to Simonds, you WILL meet the friendly landowner.
    6. DO NOT take off from JC in formation. DO NOT! FYI narrow runway between tall trees and nowhere for wing turbulence to go, in fact, wait till plane in front of you takes off and is way down the runway moving to the right above the trees!! DO NOT ask me how I know.
    7. Fly the pattern when landing.
    8. Bring rain gear. Us will probably rain at some point.
    9. DO NOT let Jim Richmond let you fly any plane he brings. It will ruin you.
    10. DO NOT listen to Tangle about his pig hunt.

Thatís about all you need to know for now.

I was in line waiting to take off when #6 happened. Very close call. Amazing how everyone who took off after had much better spacing. Thought for sure the top of that Ponderosa along the runway would have a new xmas tree ornament.

Did that with the champ once taking off behind a 150 hp cub. As usual, the film crew was there to ensure the entire world has the opportunity to see the results from outside- thank god I got to land elsewhere before I came back to base and could pull the seat cushion out of where it lodged. Check out the Yukon Quest Video "Spirit of the North", some cool flying action!

Uncle Eaton, can I borrow the mini-gun to mount for JC? Worried that your name will be used unfavorable so might need extra firepower!! Eddie, can you bring an extra Warthog for me?

You were next to take off....I, unfortunately, was alongside the runway and almost had to hit the dirt as SE attempted to do a formation takeoff.....those were the days!

Yah, even Cubs make wake vortices. Got some mighty wide eyes following too close on takeoff once - - Side-by-side formation takeoff fine. But close behind, not!

When you do a formation takeoff, you do it in close formation. That keeps you out of the dirty air. Fighters use 20 second spacing otherwise.

What was supposed to happen was the second plane (me) lift off first to stay in clean air. That didnít happen. As I said before, DO NOT attempt it at JC. No way out, giant trees on the right and a big ass mountain on the left. And planes lining the runway on both sides. Iíll wait till the plane in front of me is over the other end of the runway. The air is usually still in the mornings and cold, cold air settles, the turbulence hangs around. Youíll feel pressured to go by the line of planes waiting to take off. F em, they can wait while you are being safe. Being 3 minutes behind is far better than getting hurt. Be patient and safe. I see someone take off and as soon as they leave the ground another plane will take off. If they had been in my situation they would never do that again. I just cringe when I see it. Other airports where there is an ďoutĒ is fine. Not at JC.

Iíve even been up at the line and while waiting to take off someone else gets ansy and goes around me or cuts in front of me and takes off. Stupid fís. Big hurry to get to breakfast only to wait in line for an hour.

Just donít get in a hurry, enjoy your friends, enjoy the scenery and be safe.
