Yellow Fin @ Kaena Point, 2019.01.10

Our ship is back in the ocean! She will be berthed at the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor during the process of re-provisioning to try again for a channel crossing (which is not easy with the trades right now).

Flossie helped me move her from the Keehi boat ramp to the permanent mooring early this morning. Flossie is a great deck hand, never says a word. Please see video below of Flossie at the helm;

Persistence is rewarded

Finally crossed the Kaiwi Channel. Anchored at Lono Harbor and caught a Mahi Mahi the next day! Was trolling the 40 fathom bathymetric line and got a strike at a depth of 230’.

Stay onboard for the GARMIN VIRB camera clips! Soon to be released. But until then, there’s a south swell today so paddling out this morning...will be between “Kaiser’s” and “Ala Moana” (depending on conditions).

Aloha!

2019.09.14 Helo Backcountry Video Experience and Salmon Fishing

It’s salmon fishing season in Oregon and the rivers are very crowded. Interesting too, the seals are in force. The seals are blocking much of the rivers, waiting patiently for fish, as I could see from the air. I have never fished the PNW. Maybe one day I’ll charter a boat or something. But, Hawaii is only a (5.5) hour flight from PDX and that’s where I really enjoy fishing for now.

The weather was perfect. This Saturday before the FREE KONP Bar-B-Q lunch my good IA buddy and I went out to Walport to see how the rivers were.

Note: The aircraft instruments had visible moisture and were sticky. The helicopter had not been flown for (2) months. So I opened the drain on the belly for the pitot/static system and it was dry luckily. After several hours of flying the visible moisture started to evaporate. The instruments are working well. Also, removed the preservation engine oil and filled her up with Phillips 66 20w50 X/C. Since the engine is under warranty, I’m monitoring oil and fuel consumption very closely. The fuel and oil burn are exactly with in operation specifications. Good news.

Aloha and Mahalo for watching!

Only (5) more days until Fall Season and the good Earth will be straight up & down in relation to the Sun. Beware, the weather is definitely changing. The first significant low pressure just passed Monday and today it was gale force on the Coast of Oregon (starting to dissipate). NWS advises snow levels starting 6K-7K MSL. I put my little helo away and decided to recon the dunes on an ATV. My guess the gusts were 35kts+ during the frontal passage here in Dune City, Oregon. A wise sailor said “Watch out for the equinox”. And I do.

2019.09.17 Here I am running for cover in huge gusts:

The ocean looked like a full blown Winter Gale. Scary!

A first for me, I stayed at a trailer park. The place was very nice. Woahink Lake RV Resort, is clean, super friendly and has direct access to the Oregon Dunes Recreation area, if you like riding. RV parks have a tendency to be upscale on the coast. But, hauling my ghetto trailer and sleeping in the truck didn’t matter. Nobody gave me the stink eye. Definitely taking Mary there for a vacation one of these days.

Here’s a video introducing the place and a bit of riding.

Update at 18:00PST KONP:

The inclement weather has moved more inland. The sun is peaking through the beautiful white scattered clouds again. Wind is pretty much calm. Time to look over the horizon...I’m preparing to cross the Cascade Mountain Range, in the R44, hopefully before Summer is “All Pau brah” (4) days.

NWS KONP point hourly forecast is looking fabulous:

2019.09.19 KONP Siletz

Question for the video gurus:

(1) I downloaded Adobe Premier which is part of the “Creative Cloud” suite. I uploaded the following video and the playback screen is smaller than the YouTube screen? My old Adobe Premier uploaded using the correct full-size playback screen. Is there a way to correct the smaller play area?

Here’s a flight from this great beautiful morning in the PNW. KONP-Siletz-KONP.

If you are frustrated with crowded beaches and can handle wearing a wetsuit then, check this 25-SEP-19 video. There is more empty coastline than “You can shake a stick at”. Note: major storms can pass through however. Welcome to the Pacific Northwest!

I notice that you usually are carrying a jug in the copilot's foot well. Is this for CG control??

Hello SkyWagon8A,

The item is a Yamaha Generator (28 LBS). Helps with CG. Also, good backup electricity. “Two birds with one stone “.

Thank you for watching, I enjoy answering any questions you may have.

Decided to go offshore and fish this morning (no luck). But, there were/are literally tons of huge whales on the South Shore of Oahu. Not Maui but Oahu. The only camera I had was my budget Android cellphone. Was nice to see the whales enjoying their vacation in Hawaii from Alaska.
