Calling All The Old Guard

Steve Pierce

BENEFACTOR
Graham, TX
Been talking to lots of the original SuperCub.org members that have come out of the woodwork on the woodwork on the "Grandfather of SuperCub.org" thread. Then Cathy and I fly up to Kirby's hamburger lunch yesterday and got together with Sharp, Eaton, Kirby, Kirby's daughter Molly who is now an engineer at Cub Crafters, a couple of her friends along with everyone's wives. We got to telling stories of picking each other's airplanes out of precarious places and other crazy stuff that has happened over the years. Those girls thought we were nuts and the wives lived through it all and knew the stories from having lived it. We had a great time and it made me think about all of the folks I have met because of this website and hope maybe we can stir a bunch of these old timers ;) to come back and reminisce about the fun we have had and hopefully get the newer folks involved as well. Memories from New Holstein, Johnson Creek, The Wad, Red River Redneck Fly-In, OK18 our seminar here. What a hoot. Blowing out the cob webs and remembering some good times.
Cathy arriving at Claremore, OK on our way to New Holstein in 2009 with John Mead's Fly Miss Daisy.

That was a good time yesterday. Lots of old stories being told. I called Pierce this morning and we rehashed a few more stories,,,, about a certain outlaw flying low in South Dakota with me in the back seat.... and our old Alabama buddy,,,,, and the story that took place on his way to JC one year... If you werent at JC hearing the story you missed it.. I lost 10 lbs laughing so much. I would love all those folks, Deano, Papp, Wilbur, Ed, Boz, Schwend and Hartman, Powell, Tungee, Murf and others unnamed to get together sometime. Id come....

It was in the mid-latter years of Pierce's "Pick SJ's cub apart" seminar, but the pink notes on 94C by JM, and then the crab feed and stories around that cooker were good times!!!

This site has brought a lot of great people together.

Steve, your post brought back a bunch of good memories of the Red River Redneck flyin.

I flew in from South Bend, and had literally just landed. I was still sitting in the plane when this tiny lady pulled up next to me in a great big Cadillac. She called out to me “Honey, I’m going to the store. Do you need anything?” It was Eric Tallifero’s mom, and that was my introduction to the most genuinely hospitable people of Oklahoma.

I’d arrived a day before the official start of the fly-in, and as I recall Charlie Aileron was an early arrival, too. Towards evening Eric called us up to his parent’s house. Not sure what he had in mind, I headed that way. When I came in the door I could see the large dining room table set for all of us early arrivals. Eric’s mom, sister, and wife put on a feed like I’ve never seen. I’ve never been treated so well!

If my memory serves me, SteveE demonstrated his detachable tailwheel when arriving. And later I think Ed Doyle did a little tilling with his prop and Charlotte just rolled her eyes. We did a fly out lunch and I remember visiting with the fellow sitting to my right. After lunch someone came up to me and said “That guy you were talking to at lunch - in addition to his Cub he’s got a Citation and a P-51.” You would never have known he was well to do by anything he said or did, he was unassuming. And I think that’s one of the things that really differentiates the SuperCub crowd from the other aviation groups - it’s full of the most genuine and likable people.

Old ??? Yes OLD GUARD ---not so sure. What I am sure of is all the beautiful places I've been privileged to visit and all the good folks I could share it with. S C Dot Org has played a key role for most of my 1000 hrs of great adventures with the old PA-12 and many hours in other peoples Super Cubs--Cessnas--Citabrias---t-craft---etc. etc. Special thanks to Ag-pilot , Winer, a pair of Jim Olsons and most of all my first instructor --Glenn Short. Glenn and his '52 Super Cub introduced me to the pure joy of off airport fun. Now very near 5,000 hrs. and can honestly say, without serious problems---mechanically or otherwise. (got to learn how to post OLD pics) ---geezer Dan

I apologize for the running sentences, and the improper punctuation with my preceding post... I hope I didn't offend any English majors or minors ;-)

Eric "watch out for those tires" translation Towers. I laughed so hard. Tunge sat next to Ed and they got to talking and come to find out both of them use to ferry Super Cubs to Alaska during the pipe line days and sell them. Pretty good stories for sure.

Got a picture of Eddie at Steves Rebuilding seminar, when he stopped on the interstate to catch an armadillo, so Laura could see one. Stinky old thing in a box! Wish I could figure out how to post it. Jon
