Hi Pete, don't think I would have the stones to land the bosses airplane on its belly, lol. But does sound like fun. I do plan on coming over this spring. Good advise I'll pass this weekend.

The original Seabee was approved on skis. To the best of my knowledge the Twin never had any skis installed.
    http://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgMakeModel.nsf/0/c679a2c9dfa6cebd86257e740061ff36/$FILE/A-769_Rev_16.pdf
see item 203. It's interesting that 30 pounds of ballast is removed when the skis are installed. For those who don't know, the Seabee carries 50+ pounds of lead ballast forward under the batteries.

Were the skis wheel skis or straights? The pic I posted was from Canada and datum skis

    Tom,
Cool photo of the Datums on that "Bee" speaks pretty highly for their ruggedness!
Before Kenmore figured out they could land the Beavers up on the Glaciers on floats in the early days they were landing SeaBee's up there! ( on the belly)Lots of old photos of it at Kenmore. Bob Monroes first pilot Bill Fisk, did the original test flights while Bob hovered above in a T-Craft on skis for rescue! Fisk worked there from 1948/1980. His name is in my first log book as the Examiner for both my Commercial and Instrument......(1979) interesting character, great old feller, always refer to you as "pard" if he liked ya. Did my original check out in the Beavers with him as well. Showed me lots of stuff to keep ya alive.

Great pictures guys, looks great on wheel skis. I would guess you would need something like Flightlite 4000's for the twin.too bad they are so. Expensive.

Looks like a fun day. I chatted with a few people helping build the Saranac Lake ice castle yesterday. They told me there was a bunch of airplanes that stopped by last year and seemed happy when I told them I knew most of the people that came. They’d like to see you all come back. Doesn't it open up next weekend? Kenny, it would also be nice if we could get a better ice thickness report seeing as it's flowing water. Maybe you can get someone to drill some holes where we park?

Whats the story on the icehouse? Is that a summer attraction thing? How long does the ice last?

We had an icehouse where I grew up, but never used it as such.
I may be wrong but that probably won't stop me from arguing about it.

Brian, the store, bar and campground used the ice during the summer. On a good year the ice would last thru Labor day. But a few years ago our nanny state of NY told them that the ice could not be used for consumption because it was stored in sawdust as an insulator. Nasty stuff that sawdust . So now the owner of the bar and store ran a bunch of tubing on the cellar floor and as the ice melts they circulate the water thru a homemade air condition to cool the bar and store in summer. These guys go to a lot of trouble keeping this going, lots of equipment and work for one day a year

They are planning on being finished for the winter carnival which is scheduled from 02/01 - 02/10. I'll stop by and get a thickness report this week, but as in years past I think you'll be safe landing where you do (and avoiding the narrows around the marina). Let me see what I can come up with.

Stay off the Saranac River ice. It is impossible to predict where there is ice or where there is not ice on a flowing river. Mark Harwood stepped out of his Champ and thru the ice a couple of years ago while on this foolish sojourn to the ice castle. PM me for his number if anyone wants to confirm that.

Sage advice, cruiser. In early 80s, I delivered a spare left ski and prop (by car) so this poor guy’s 140 could be flown off the Saranac River, aka "Lake" Flower.

I swung by the icehouse and looked at the river. Lots of dark spots, more than I would want to see before landing on it.
There was a guy plowing around the marina on the southeast(?) side, but well away from all the dark spots.

Still hoping Kenny gets an ice report.
Just got a call from our farmer buddy Roger that the NH saphouse Stuart's & John's is now open weekends 7 to 3. They have about a foot of snow.

The NY saphouse, Stone House Farm is also open weekends now. Drifted snow so I need to go check it out.

I stopped in at a local shop that all the ice fishermen hang out at. Oddly enough I met a guy that was doing a lot of the work on the ice palace - said he watched Jeff pull in last week. They are cautioning that the ice from the ice palace toward town to the west will vary from 14" to 4" at any given time. As Cruiser and High Time Cub pointed out, the thinnest ice is along the river channel as it is continually moving. They all suggested that the best ice will be on the western shore north of the narrows (marina area) toward the ice palace. As Peter posted, there are several dark spots sporadically all over the lake. You might want to give this trip some thought.
