Real world PA-12 speeds

My PA-12 has an O235-C with a max red line of 2600 and a Sensenich prop

I’m getting:

2300 static revs
2350 in the climb at circa 65mph and circa 520fpm at about sea level
2350 gives me 95mph straight and level
2500 gives 110mph
2600/wide open gives not much more than 110!!

Do these numbers seem about right?!!

Depends on what tires you have on it. 800 x 6 or bushwheels? makes a big difference! Wheel pants?

Good to see that PA-12 in the air, remember it when it was based at Spanhoe. The speeds sound about right for a Cruiser on the original type engine. Around 5 mph more than a 90HP SC :)

Thank you and great you’re glad to see it back in the air!! It’s had a lot of TLC poured into it since May!! New Permit Just granted and about to fit a Mode S to join the new 8.33 and so will be using the mighty speed and fuel range to go places in 2019 :) Looking forward to meeting you!

Agreed, I think that's just about textbook. Mine will do 110 @ 2500...... if I push the nose down a couple hundred FPM.

Mine has an O320 with a 74/50 climb prop. It seams to cruise right at 100mph on Federal 2000 skis at 2400rpm.
My ROC is about double your numbers. When its on 8:00x6 tires its 105mph at 2400. It goes 93mph on 31" tires at 2400 with borer prop. I would like to try it sometime with a 74/56 cruise prop and the 6:00x6 tires
as I am sure it would easily cruise over 110.......
It has recent fabric , slippery paint and standard 12 fairings. However, this is a very light 150hp Cruiser at 1070lbs........
. Hope that helps. Yesterday here on my lawn.

Wow!!! Fantastic plane and house!!!!

Apart from the ROC doesn’t sound like a 320 makes a huge difference speed wise?

LoL well thanks for the compliment, and its true, as Super Crow says, I like a nice paint job! Here is my last Cruiser, that I painted. It was on 2500 Airglass skis. Took a few days to mask it for two colors, the scheme was our design. We used to get tons of compliments on it. This one was about 5mph slower on 31's than the one I have now???
Too many guys are so burned out by the time they finish the project they just slap a quick stripe down the side........
20181217_172704~2.jpg I thought it looked nice on floats too!

I cruise about 92 @ 2400 rpm with either a Borer 82-42 or a Catto 82-39.

That sounds right Perry same basic numbers as mine. How heavy is your 12? Gotta say having flown
Lots of different 18s over the years, back when 150hp/Borer/30" Airstreaks was the standard set up 90% of them were 85mph. But nowadays everyones 18 on 35" tires seams to go 100-110 so I guess they can
blow by a Citabria on 6:00/6???? The air must be ALOT thinner now then it used to be? Or they could have a very "kind" airspeed.lol

My 12 is 1100 empty. I had it completely taken down and rebuilt in '13 with the primary emphasis on keeping it light. I couldn't believe the final number until I stood on all 3 scales myself, and they all agreed with my Weight Watchers bathroom scale (one was off 1 lb). It has every light weight accessory available. Starter, alt, oil cooler, battery, Catto prop -- oops, did I say that? Basic panel w/mini com and txp. It flies great.
I might've been a touch optimistic on my cruise. Maybe 90-91 @ 2400. To make 92 I have to run the tach a touch proud of 2400. 2450 makes about 95 and if I stuff it and let it run it makes about 102 with the needle on the top side of the red line, maybe 2725. Tach checks out to be spot-on.
It's also rigged to a gnat's a** and rumored to have it's washout reduced so it's as clean as a dirty airplane can be.
