Another good elk season for my wife and I. She with a cow tag and a general tag for me.

This fellow was headed for the timber at daylight. It was a cold, frosty morning at 16 degrees. I used what’s becoming a new favorite rifle for me. It is a custom .338 Federal shooting 210 Partitions. He was 215 yards out and my only option was an offhand shot.

Not quite hunting but I'm on my way home at around 1am this morning on a 4 lane heading West at 70mph when this coyote jumps off of a snowbank on my right side and runs in front of my truck. I think the ABS saved his ass as he popped out the left side of the truck and stopped right outside of my driver's door. He started trotting down the westbound lane on my left so I starting moving at the same speed . Darn yote never left the left lane and we were side by side for a couple hundred feet. I even had time to dig out my phone and turn the flash on and get a few pictures.

Then he made an in proper U turn

A little tidbit:
Awhile back I shared a couple beers with a hunting party comprised of Southern Pacific Railroad conductors. The topic of animal encounters on the tracks came up, often not ending so well for the critters.
Apparently, (they theorize and I believe it) most animals, predator or prey, use their speed to elude capture, often choosing the route that best allows them to Run fast
Unfortunatly the raised railroad bed appears to provide the best means for escape.
Many elk, cattle, bear, etc. have exhausted themselves and been overrun by trains as a result.
Guess that may explain why game often runs down the road for awhile before wising up and darting into the woods.
