Wisconsin and Minnesota Public Use Airports with Turf Runways Map

Jeff Russell may have already posted this somewhere, but I found the link to this nice map of Wisconsin turf runways.

You can find it at: https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/d...witurfrwys.pdf

This compliments the version developed a couple of years ago by MN DOT...

These are helpful, and I hope more states catch on to doing this.

    Thanks for posting Randy.

I played a very small part in this as I sent a copy of the MN poster to the guys at the WI Bureau of Aeronautics.

They took the bait and did a great job of creating one for WI.

Even said I could co-brand it with the RAF logo which I haven't seemed to get around to yet.

Nice Maps !!! Didn't realize the center of Wisconsin was so uninhabited !!
Are those only airports with FAA certified turf runways.
We have three turf runways here, but none are FAA certified.
I may be wrong but that probably won't stop me from arguing about it.

There are many turf runways in central Wisconsin, but few are registered.
A gun is like a parachute. If you need one and don't have one, you'll probably never need one again.

Seems odd that there is no official turf runway at KOSH... sort of like a [insert your favorite metaphor here]

Not sure that this is what you meant but there is a turf runway at OSH. It's the Pioneer Airport (WS17) on the EAA grounds.

Land there every February for the EAA Skiplane fly-in

I did know that there was a strip there but wasn't aware that it had it's own identifier. I suppose the reason it isn't on the chart is because it isn't public use. In that case I go back to my original opinion, which is that OSH should have an official public-use grass strip on it given its importance in the promotion of general and recreational aviation.

Pioneer Airport is not open to the public, but we do hold a few special events each year that offer the opportunity to land there. The ski plane fly-in was already mentioned. There are a couple of other events that are held there as well. Keep an eye on the EAA website and the e-Hotline newsletter for info.

As for a turf runway at KOSH, all I can say is, we're working on it. What seems like a no-brainer to us pilots is less obvious to airport management and county board. This is an ongoing project that we will not give up on. Keep your fingers crossed!!

Joe, thanks for the reply and the work. My home airport has a long instrument runway suitable for business jets but no official grass strip. I asked the manager about it and he said "it's OK with me if you land on the grass next to the runway; lots of people do." I then asked why the airport can't just designate that as an official runway and he mentioned something about runway clearance requirements and so on. I am not informed enough on the rules at play here, but it seems that grass strips on general aviation airports are harder to create than they look (or maybe than they should be).

    Great charts by the way!

Yep, that's part of the issue. But there are ways around that too. Like I said, we're working on it!!

Thanks for the info Joe and for all you are doing to support flying. Also thanks for the great guidance a few months ago regarding the ferry permit. My subsequent conversation with the FAA was a non-issue.
