Flintstone Ski Dollies

I'm sure this method has been used many times before, but here is an inexpensive way to move a light, straight ski equipped airplane from a snow covered surface to a dry concrete hangar floor.

Pick up four eight foot lengths of one and a half inch inside diameter PVC pipe at a building supply store. When pushing the airplane backwards into the hangar, place the first pipe laterally under the heel of the skis. With the skis rolled up a short distance on that pipe, lift the the nose of each ski up enough to slide another pipe under the front of them. Now the the airplane can be pushed easily as the pipes are moved progressively under the skis until the airplane is in the position desired.

When left on the pipes, the skis won't freeze to a wet concrete floor and are less vulnerable to corrosion.

That works great even with 1/2" conduit. If you leave your bungees hooked up all the time they will stretch out. Newer bungee stock sucks

If you got some of the plastic strips from a snowmachine dealer, (snowmobile for you easterners), that we use to slide skis on sled decks, that would work to slide them on all the way into place also... a bit more $ but less monkey motion

I have been playing with sleds since 1968 and have been in and out of over 50 sled dealerships and Museums with factory signs and sales brochures. My buddie owns a sled museum with sleds back to 1939. Never in the last 50 years have I seen anything that said snowmachine. Do you also put a watermachine on the back of your boat or use a dirtmachine to till your garden? Whats up with that? Lack of daylight affects your vocabulary ;-) Back in 79 I worked one winter making snow at a ski area, they had some snowmachines that looked like this

Now they look like this

No, we put kickers on the back of our skiffs, and what's a garden?

Jim

I used to have a sled. Jumped on it and slid down snow covered hills.

Legal bait for moose!;-)

Glenn, please notice that I was specific for you easterners, (not nor-easters), that they are snowmobiles. I realize that your vocabulary is limited and you guys don't get out much, so I tried to include you with terms you would understand. I am sorry I forgot you are limited to one thought per sentence, or one instrument in a plane at a time:lol::lol:

That said- is a trip to that museum on the docket for next WAD??? Sleds back to 1939!

By the way, Next January we will be having the 50th running of the Alcan 200 if you know guys that want to go fast. Winds brought the speed down this year to 112 mph average, including 2,000 feet of vertical up and down twice and 5 required full stops.8) Lyn averaged 83 mph on the 440 fan for 3rd in class.

This is my oldest, 1965 Arctic Cat 120D that was a rental sled in Phelps Wi back in the 1960. Metal chain track, 4 stroke and reverse with a heated seat.

George, Danny and I grew up together and played with junk sleds as kids. He never stopped collecting and was an over the road trucker and bought sleds all over the country. Thats where my 69 Doo and the 120 came from. He ended up with over 1000 sleds at one time. He built the first building on his dads farm in Northern NJ and the town fought him over intended use, took him almost 10 years to get permission for the 2nd building. Ran the Museum for 20+ years but started selling sleds off a few years ago to finance his daughters wedding. He always had a vintage swap meet weekend in November and Joe and I and a few others have landed in his dads hayfield during the show. Sadly half of what he had is gone and he's playing in Costa Rica building a couple houses.

George I see there is one in Turner Maine maybe we can visit?

I dream of an Arctic Cat Z... he got one for sale?

Also, I am a bit of a TNT Free air guy, 73 pre-production...

I will shoot a picture of me towing my bird around with my work sled, sno-go, ski-doo, snowmachine for you. They are a tool!!! That is why we need more than one.

With plastic on the bottom of skis, a simple pulley at the back of the hangar and line back out front you can use a sled, wheeler, auto or horse to pull your ski plane into place easily. Toss some or 1/2" wash rock down and she will roll like on marbles. also.

I have pictures running around on my old girl here and there, but this to me is a whole lot better:

http://whitehorsestar.com/Sports/snowmachine-race-will-roar-into-50th-year

The Red 440 is Lyn in the slow down area after the half way line. I suspect she is still doing about 75 mph looking at the photo, and my guess is she crossed the half way line at just over 90mph. Not bad for a 440 fan, stock machine but for some very small changes.

440 to 550 fan sleds are some of the best balanced sleds ever built. Ran a 78 Yamaha 440 fan Enticer back in the day that at a little over 300lbs was one of the best sleds I ever rode.

Ok, I didn’t start the thread drift, but since we’re here... when I moved down to the east coast of the lower 48, the whole language thing was hard - forget about sled or machine or mobile, there was soda, gyro pronounced (hero), frappe, bubbler, directional, meme’, and on and on........... ok, now back to the regular scheduled thread.......

So............lead or extension cord....lead light or drop light....crescent or adjustable wrench.....crick or creek.....erl or oil..........ruff or roof...basement or cellar...............

Glenn

"bag" or "sack"?

I have used plastic pipe until the stuff began to split.

Conduit is a good choice if I didnt have real dollies.

"snow machine" or "snowmaker"?

Its a matter of pride to be Alaskan and say snowmachine or sno go!!

Dolly or roller?

Coyote or Coyoteeeeee

Eaton or outlaw?

Make sure if you decide to use any plastic rollers, that you have enough strength in the sidewalls that they do no crush, and don't drop them if frozen super cold!

Now back to our thread drift... or is that a discussion drift?:nutz:

Glenn, come race with us next January... Just let me know how fast you want to go so I can find a sled the proper size.

600 class: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co0G4nwpFAQ

Open class (This was a Turbo Apex): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xT-cLEOa87E (start watching about 2:30 into the video

700 size, one of these is the record holder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XN7i5yd3U9w

Testing- the fun part! My old trailer and sleds are in that line up... so much has changed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XN7i5yd3U9w

Up till about 15 years ago I could still whoop the youngsters half the time between bar trails. My brain still says I can but my arms go on strike after awhile. Do they make a yellow pill for that?

Glenn

It takes less than 2.5 hours, even if you are slow, and it is a very smooth track: all highway!

This year was solid ice all the way with a skiff of snow. Some run ice skis and 10" carbides, but the short skis tend to continue over berms if you slide off (wind usually), so long skis tend to be favorite.

I should go pull my plane around with Gomer, formerly said GROOMER, but I took off one O and the first R! I will get a picture of my flinstone tow system.
