Drove past our strip yesterday morning, the view was out of a postcard. I couldn't resist,, had an amazing couple hours playing in the snow on the river and enjoying the warm weather. The last pic, is looking down the strip from the other end as the sun set on an epic day.

Flew up to a Lodge to do a favor for a friend, wanted to lay some tracks today since it was too cold to mess around too long on the ground. The snowmachiners found the strip and sure carved it up. Drug spot out on the river, will try that next trip.

Perfect day to watch the birds fly by:

We lost "The Shepherd" yesterday after a long illness. Jerry Engelbrecht is a Minnesota aviation legend having solo'd the family J-3 at the farm at age 9. He was an aerial wolf hunter with his dad Art for many years (in the same PA-18-125 Cub the family had owned since 1960), served in Vietnam with the 7th Cavalry flying Cobra's and finished his career as Chief Pilot of the MN DNR. He was the best of the best. Blue skies and tailwinds Jerry, May God take you to Himself. You are missed.

The temps warmed up a bit, but the flight out to the lake was still -5 degrees, the lake was drifted pretty bad, but found a spot near shore smooth enough. Saw a large pack of wolves as I was landing and was able to get a photo of 4 of them,, there was about 7 or 8 in the pack. The Pike were hungry and it took me longer to clean them, than it did to catch them. Nice to have fresh fresh fish after a long winter. Simply amazing to enjoy a day on the ice sucking up sunshine. The lake ice was only about 2 feet thick,, was over 5 feet last year, we have had very cold temps, but record snow, looks like the snow has insulated the ice. I don't expect a long season this year.

If that's E Twin there's typically been at least two major wolf packs that roam the area. One would come up from the Toklat River/Kantishna drainage and circle the lakes to the west looking for moose in the isolated cottonwood/spruce parks. Another ran a circle line from Lakes Wien-Becky-West Twin-East Twin-John Hansen-Mucha and back to Wien. They preferred the weeks before and after a full moon, but would lay low during wind spells. Never saw much for a pack towards Manley or the Zitziana River but after the 2002 and two later fires that country opened up for them. Nice pike!

Flew a couple minutes from the airport to the neighbors field across the road from the library. The library is where the old timers gather every evening to solve the world’s problems and have a couple adult beverages. They came over to inspect the cub and get a couple pictures.

First really warm day here yesterday, my Buddy and I, who flies a KitFox, flew out together and did some Pike fishing. Was a busy day, as everyone was out enjoying the warm weather and calm winds. Not often that my Cub is the "fast" plane.

Is anyone near St Paul, MN? I’m working for Dauntless Air on a couple FireBoss at Fleming Field for a few weeks and would love to see what it looks like around here (from above). We’re just working half days on the weekend and the weather looks like it might be improving, so thought I’d give a shout out.

We just left the Willmar ,MN area on Sunday, whew, the wind can blow up there. We picked up a M-7 Maule and flew it to upstate NY. It was 9* when we left and not a cloud, beautiful country. Landed in ALB yesterday after chasing the wx with a wind 20G30 on the GRN. Nice flying a near new airplane, even had heat that worked!

Well that was a fun ride. Turbines are pretty smooth. Drag is wild with it at flight idle.

    Where did you fly today?

Even with the cool stuff, I’m ready. It’s getting warm and sticky in east tx. Eastbound in the morning.

For a real fun time leave it in ground idle, if it’s like an ag plane you’ll be looking through the top of the canopy on final.

I found a ride, not in a Cub, but it still let me see what it looks like south and east of St Paul. Wipline Seaplane base in the pictures. The strip looks inviting…next time maybe I can fly out myself

PM me sometime if you’d like to stop in and say hello—I work at Wipaire and have a J3/PA-11 over by Prescott Flying Club. Phdigger123 (Mike B) is building a Javron Cub on the west side of the runway too.

I flew the Camp Bullis (San Antonio, TX) fire. 4000 Acres. Cool to see from the air at dusk. No TFR issued, I thought that was strange.

I was flying back to the west out of Kansas City one beautiful night and thought i was over flying ground fog. There were long orange lines below and i realized the ranchers were burning off the flint hills.

That’s a VM1000. I had one that worked fine, but they have a reputation for failing and can’t replace.

Not recent but just came across these 2018 photos I took during a relocation flight, John Wayne airport to Paso Robles:
We’re in “Witchcraft” manning the waist guns, “Nine O Nine” is off our left wing. Low level, flight of two, over Hollywood.
What an honor, sad to see the program come to an end.

After lots of hours learning how to run a grader, grading the runway, re-grading to fix the previous grading, then grading the ruts from where the runway was soft and the grader tires dug in- I went flying today.

No destination, no real plan, but was the first time since mid-december I have flown. I will say that it felt good to be back in the air, and I found this bar a few miles from home.

Off about 6 am on Saturday to head South to give a flight review. Cool enough to need a light jacket. It was 102 deg F soon after noon. I miss the winter already.

We had the privilege of flying into Pioneer Airport (next to KOSH) with a bunch of folks up here for the RAF Leadership conference. It was really fun. Going into the museum with only a few people there - compared to when everybody is trying to escape the heat at OSH - was very nice. They are working on a new permanent grass strip as well, look for that in '23.
