Beautiful day for the last flight of the season, -10c and sunny after 2 weeks of typical rain/snow fall weather. Went Norman Wells to Fort good hope to have a coffee with a friend (she owns the 172 and her dad owns the 185 in the pic). After that we sand bar hopped down the Mackenzie river back to Norman Wells.

I don't have a cub but have to make-do in this thing for the time being. Still good for sightseeing, just can't land the places I'd like. Had to use some music for the sped up parts.

The modern equivalent of the phrase "lions led by donkeys" is "innovation led by lawyers".
Finally got a chance to fly again after a long cold snowy October!

Great memories, first flying job after instructing was in a Beech 18. The C-47 also gave me a flashback, jumped out of one and the pilots didn’t seem to pull back the left engine when we left,WOW ,lol.
So had a good day today. I was not planing to fly however, had a pilot come up from lower 48 looking for work, a friend gave him my contact. Nice day so we went to the KNIK, got to fly below tree level for a long time calm air. Did bush pilot landing on gravel bar. He stopped taking pictures over the glacier because he said NONE could show the view!! We saw a friend with a cow moose tag and did a fly by. Two hours latter having lunch at 1400 with a few other pilots we got the call MOOSE DOWN. Sooooo now it is GETERDONE MODE. Get home, change out to clean moose gear/spend the night. Plane has more fuel than needed and I took belly pod of the day before for some paint work, but no passenger. I can get a moose behind me if needed!! Two planes, two strong backs, and one old guy head out a little after 1500. when we turn into the KNIK it is now blowing 40 and it is no laminar!! Now I am getting my ass kicked, crying like a 3 year old, and going low does not help!! Think of the guy on the ground and what he would do for me, pull out some SUCK IT UP and push on. It has to be let down up valley! No such luck, find friends plane and take over a mile just to do a 180 turn X 4 landing area is a 4 wheeler trail kind of straight. Light is ok but you really can't see the tops of the trees/brush so much. Moose is 3/4 done when we get on the ground. Strong backs get it to the plane. Now back taxi in 40+winds for take off. We have nose into the wind so tail comes up and it wants to fly at 50 ft, give it some more time on the ground and it is in the air on its own. Take a mile wide downwind turn, pull 1/2 flaps and go to 2000 rpm still over 100mph ground speed waiting for last plane to come off the strip. Shooter of moose is an ex Navy pilot flying a 12, he does high cover with multiple downwind turns in this crap(much bigger balls than mine). Last cub with two strong backs comes off ATV trail. I am pulled back to 1/2 flaps and 2000 RPM, so they can get to me, they are pushed up showing 147 over the ground with a 150 hp cub. We make the turn for Birchwood and wind lays down. When we land the runway is ICE!! I think straight skis would be better than wheels on this stuff!! Taxi to hanger SLOW!!! Just another day in Alaska.

I flew for a check ride yesterday on a very windy day with direct crosswinds at 15 mph.
The good news is I can take passengers today
Flew to a friend's wife's funeral yesterday. Sad day but it was good to reconnect with so many of our Super Cub family and hopefully helped him. Flew 140 miles pulling up over power poles in dead calm air with Cathy in the back and she didn't get sick. Sorry no pictures, had my hands full flying.
Lakes are freezing up around here, good day to patrol around.

I do have a set of Federal 2000's (1952 models I think. Restored with new bottoms, now gathering dust in the hangar next to Mary Alverson's also unused set of Federal 2000's.).
Res too much snow, given the limited amount of flying I do and the fight to get straight skis from the hangar to the ski strip (have Sled Dawg ski dolly's that work well, but still, it's a long hike...), just leaving it on the Goodyears is easier. Besides, about anywhere you need to go in this state will have a useable sled trail or ice road if the snowpack is to deep/crusty etc.

I hear you on the difficulty with straight ski's....I have a set of federals as well that have never been on, held off for same reason. I'm thinking I'll just sell them and save up for wheel penetration skis (trick air or Landes)
A buddy took a sunrise flight Monday morning to Kileaua, the TFR to 34,000' went into effect two hours later. They since dropped it to 9,000' (5000' AGL) where it will probably stay. Back to vog conditions for leeward Big Island.

This second attachment is a quick time video, oh well it is not supported on this site. Shows looking right into the caldera close up with two large lava falls, what no one gets on the news and all else got aced out by the TFR.
Changed the oil today and of course did two trips around the pattern to make sure the oil pressure was ok
