Where did you fly today?

Been a couple decades since I worked on that plane for the veterinarian at peters creek. You survival gear may burn up with the wreck.....

Appreciate the concern. Was wearing treated down top to bottom and other layers along with other survival gear and communication equipment. I’m new to ski flying, but not new to cold weather outings and situations where survival depends on being prepared. Not claiming that I’m immune from making mistakes or that I can’t learn, but when I said it was chilly I didn’t mean to say that I was unprepared.

I like the way you didn't leave foot tracks in your picture of the landed airplane, all my ski landing pics show my trail out to where I take the picture! I'm too lazy to do otherwise, or maybe the snow is too deep and I don't want to take the time to put on the snowshoes. Same with the untracked snow in front after you stopped, makes for a pretty picture but as others have said, can get you into trouble. The interesting thing about ski flying is how just a few hours can radically change conditions, what you got away with earlier may not work later. There is nothing worse then realizing that when trying to take back off, you have reached your max ground speed and the acceleration stops, and it isn't even close to lift off speed! And then when and if you have enough length to make a 180 and head back to try again but now in your tracks, so better, you get bogged down in the turn. All in all, I can't imagine why anybody would willing choose to ski fly, ha ha.

Yep, skis are a lot of fun but can end up being a lot of work! Used to fly a 185 on Landes wheel penetration skis. Spent a couple of extra days on Shell lake one winter trying to pack a strip. Of course, staying at the Brinker’s place wasn’t too bad a deal. You know you might be in trouble when you can’t open the door because the snow is blocking it.

A friend in ANC who had a Twin Bee told me of landing in the snow on the belly without skis. In one case the snow was so deep that he couldn't open the side doors.

I’ve been thinking about trying that with the twin bee. How about the sponsons, are they strong enough if the touch the snow? The guy in Alaska wouldn’t happen to be a retired Judge would it?

That's the guy KJ. He was a great friend. I would be concerned in deep snow, though not so much if not deep enough to dig in. I have landed and taken off on dry grass with the gear up. It got out shorter than the landing, though it was three people lighter on take off.

The pic I posted earlier was during a breakfast flight to Afton, the hills shown I was landing on are Wyoming hills, over 8,000', you ought to see what their mountains look like! Anyway, while parking near the Husky plant, prior to the short walk across the highway to the cafe I've been going to for going on 40 years now, I always take a stroll thru the plant's tie down area, and saw this, something you don't see every day, or ever?

Interesting. Notice the wing tip, it looks as though the slats retract though I can't see how.

Got out in the locals hay field doing TnG

The main ice road between the north end of Gull and Ernie's on the south was pretty good. But some of the others were terrible with overflow. There was overflow all over the lakes today.

Flew up to Two Harbors for lunch with Dad. Huge snowbanks at KTWM. The Duluth bay frozen but Lake Superior was ice free around Duluth.

Great fun in the neighborhood this weekend. Someone gained some Bush Cred on his Super Cub but will let him tell that story. 8)

How much do you think the 35s slowed you down?

Hello are you in CYCO. I am headed to work up that way on medivac I maybe in your area depending on the calls we get !

Yes, CYCO since '71. If you stop in here on a medevac flight you'll see my homebuilt PA-12 (modified) in the fabric hangar at the airport. Are you flying or part of the medical team?
