Norman wells, NT to Bennett Field (abandoned strip) then hiked down to the Great Bear River. Cooked some hot dogs on the fire pretty nice way to spend Canada Day.

You "need" a bigger brush hog, or a smaller tractor..... I just upgraded my mower, from a 4' to a 6', after buying a bigger tractor, now the mower is a bit wider than the mower, instead of the inverse. There is nothing like mowing and maintaining your own grass runway, I like to complain about it, it's a rough life!

I'm surprised to see the tusks still on that walrus carcass.
I guess it's probably illegal to take them or even possess them?

You can keep beach found ivory as long as you register it with USF&W with in 30 days. They have guidance on what’s ok to collect, but keep in mind USF&W only manages certain species of marine mammal (one of them is walrus). Whales and seals for example are under National Marine Fisheries service jurisdiction and they have their own particular can and cants criteria.

Here is a link, hope it works. http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm...rticles_id=837

Not everyone collects those tusks or heads. I pass on a few now and again. Seems like the older I get the less I can tolerate the smell. It’s been discussed before here…………..decaying marine mammal smell is horrendous and if any of that “juice” makes contact with you or plane interior, well it will be around a while. Despite the smell it’s neat to do and once cleaned up they are a nice reminder of a beach combing adventure.

Todays cruise from Dillingham-Iliamna-Kustatan-Anchorage. I’m starting to get better at being a passenger……kinda anyway. Tried my best to not be a backseat driver today but my 21yr old son would probably say otherwise. We had a fun day viewing the bears and had a tailwind the whole way.

After being gone for work for a month I got out for a few trips around the pattern. KHCR is at 5,637’ and the DA was 7,100’ this morning. Sadly the camera died (yep forgot to put in a fresh battery) so did not get the slowest of the 3 landings which touched down at 45mph IAS.

Can be bad going into a low sun. Sometimes it helps to climb and get above the smoke especially if the layer subsides from cooling temps - mid day heat lifts the layer. Vis down is usually good and terrain can be followed.

Learned this very valuable lesson yesterday,, The sun was bad but okay,, until just before I needed to flare,, the sun, smoke and reflection off the ground blinded me just before touchdown.

A day to get dialed in with high DA’s and grass. Airport is at 5,637’ and the DA was 8,200’ this morning. There was both good and bad in these landings, I was certainly a bit rusty. I was aiming for the cones, takeoff and landings were measured from the cones. Rans S-21 with a Rotax 915iS so performance is not hurt too badly by the DA

Had a friend stop in on his way to Minnesota. 85 year old crop duster bought this to teach his grandson the trade

Yes, been around here for ever. Not much of a looker but solid and a great running and flying airplane
