I flew a friend down to a coastal town in my Cherokee 235 to fetch my somewhat modified J-5A and fly it back the 460 nm to Johannesburg. Beautiful weather especially over the Stormberg mountains with 50 mile visibility Click image for larger version.

I was able to help someone check off a bucket list item. He is fighting stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He is an ultralight pilot and remote control flyer. He always wanted a ride in a J3. We are going to try to get a seaplane flight in for him as well.

Well, I did not fly anywhere today, but I did punch some holes in the sky. Still working on getting comfortable in the Rans S-21 after learning in the S-20. The 21 is just a lot tougher to bleed off energy, so I worked on energy management today.

Dave it is the Rotax 915. It is also the early long wing (30’) as opposed to the 28’ that is in production.

Nice - Rotax 915! Must be a new plane. If you ever fly out to Rocky Mountain Metro let me know. Looking to move my Husky there. Would be great to see it. I flew out in Heber area once with a Husky instructor.

Dead stick soaring, nothing like it! Old hang glider pilot here, and some days the 9K ridge behind my place is soarable for 6 or more hours, if I wanted to stay up that long.. My record, before I got really bored, was about 3 hrs. The catch is the uphill 400' strip I have, and good soaring conditions mean bad landing conditions. Wave lift though, wow, very cool.

Found a wave off the New York Catskills last winter which I took up to 12k. Ground speed 5mph.
Boston center queried if I was a balloon. Did a 180 to head home, and ground speed was 160.
    Pretty perfect, but cold day.

    I didn’t go to Russia.

But if these were in the states it would be a cool place to visit. Or turn into an airpark.

Nice pictures. I love the old truck. I drive my 36 Ford PU street rod nearly everyday this time of year. Have driven it 50,000 miles in ten years since I finished it. I love old vehicles whether they are in the air or on the road.

11:1s and a different cam gear from Lycon. Spins the 86/38 Catto 100 rpm faster than before, both static and in climb. With full tanks it climbs from 8500 ft to 14,500 ft in about 10 min.

[QUOTE=SteveE;803108]What are you herding up Mark? You can see schools of fish a couple other places.

Its the the commercial herring fishery near Togiak, northern Bristol Bay in southwestern Alaska. A seine boat and skiff are setting a seine net on a school of herring. Herring in this fishery are caught exclusively for their roe. The present fishery at probably $100 a ton is a mere whisper of what it was when it went for $1500/ton. There are many great stories about the spotter pilots, planes and flying for Togiak herring.
