God's country. -15 and my janitrol wasn't working either.View attachment 35078

I think most people reading this think I called it Gods country because of the beauty or what we get to do out here but it wasn't !! Actually about August it is the most god forsaken country around !!

It is Gorgeous in the winter with the snow, but unlike Alaska or the Mountains, many people take it for granted that they are a short ways from civilization.

Not far south of where the picture was taken lies the remnances of a PA-11 that met its demise when the Pilot apparently spotted the body of a missing girl who thought she could walk to the nearest place in the dead of winter after her car got stuck in a snowdrift. Unfortunately she was close to a powerline. A little farther south a local biologist and his spotter crashed and burned counting sage grouse with a Supercub. Just to the southeast a young couple lost their life while out hunting one Sunday and a freak storm stranded them with no provisions and no one that knew where they went. And Just to the Northeast a good friend and his neighbor failed to return after going out for an afternoon of hunting. Took over a week and lots of planes and snowmobiles to find their wrecked Supercub. 8 families whose lives were forever changed !!

Not too far East is a barren area called the Devils Dancing Ground, aptly named but for the wrong reasons.

Since that picture was taken, the area has received over a foot of new snow. I came across it yesterday bringing my cub home from where I left it over a week ago. My plans to play on the way home quickly became a just get home flight because with no blue sky and low visibility, every direction that didn't have something sticking out of the snow felt like flying into an abyss.
But still It keeps calling me back :p

I called it Gods country because one little slip out here and you'll get to meet him.
Be careful out there!!

Henny stopped by and we made a quick Cub run today.

Proof once again that the supercub.org family is the best around. I let Brad know I would be flying the Beaver down to Brainerd for some maintenance and to see if he was going to be around. He drove 30 minutes from his office, walked in and said “Who wants to go flying?” and then said “Hey Henny, nice to meet you.” Drove me over to his hangar, we pulled his very nice Cub out and he put me in the front seat no questions asked. Gave me the nickel tour of Brainerd on a beautiful day.

Two flights in the Beaver and one in the Super Cub. That’s a pretty good day in my book.

Thank you very much Brad. A true gentleman Aviator…

Finally got a nice day. Just went exploring. Found this old abandoned homestead looking all forlorn. Just waiting for a gathering perhaps?

Time I was there I had a water bottle freeze solid by my sleeping bag one night and come time to go home the cold start left me with four scored cylinders... did I mention I’m ready to go back again!

Must have hit a goose by the looks of that strut. ;)
when it warms up in the Spring it’ll wash off.

Do you suppose that it belongs to someone who goes south for the winter or is it really abandoned? It must belong to someone? Just curious since I'm not familiar with property ownership methods in that region. Would the land be leased public land? It seems sad as judging by the type and number of buildings it appears that it is/was a productive farm at some point in time.

People live in town now. Keep cattle closer to town to feed in winter. Has been known to house some pretty unsavory characters on occasion in the winter.
Stopped there once but saw this so I got the hell out of there

After all the rain, sleet and scuddy weather we have had I finally got my Sutton Exhaust installed and got to go try it out yesterday afternoon and met Tony out on the bars today where we did some clean-up so we can get a few more planes in.

Ah...so...the famous yet elusive eelpout. AKA Burbot, Lota Lota, and Mud Shark to lesser fish subject to their predation especially at night. Best poor man's lobster deep fried with beer batter or boiled and dipped in butter. I got paid to catch them for Alaska F&G, write a species Bibliography, and cashed every check. Ate them after.
