North East winter Fun 17/18

Thanks for the invite guys. Me and the wife had a nice time and I’m glad to finally meet some of you. We ended up stopping by the Dahler residence where we bought our plane and made there day. Kidd’s were very exited to see the plane running again. Image1519048380.214505.jpg

After rolling onto, over, across and through the Snow Machine tracks on Lake Pleasant last Saturday, I decided it was time for the "Pillow Soft" ABW 29's .

It's about near time to close up the Winter Fun thread, and open up the Spring/Summer Fun thread.

So Poor John (Maybe it's Little John?) Meade has tried to get gatherings at Alton Bay. But between required FAA ice and weather, that just didn't work. He tried to get a group up to Bald Mountain Camps on Rangley this weekend, and the ice has warmed up enough to push that event off a week, if not more. So, perhaps it's time to just go have breakfast.

Ol Roger Adams seems to think his field at Stuart & John's is in pretty good condition for us, maybe a touch wet on top from the last snow but pretty much bare ground and shouldn't be too terribly slippery.

So as long as the clouds let us get through the Green Mountains, we're planning on being there about 10 am tomorrow (Saturday), maybe even earlier. Come on and let's give Roger a hearty welcome to spring by enjoying some good Maple Syrup.

They even make Bear Cub Pancakes.

Wheels. Even if snow was there I'd want to land in some sticky snow the first time. There's more of a side hill then it appears until you land. 850's may be okay, but I've not landed there since last fall and can only assume the condition.

It's got a couple humps, but on 29's I've not felt any "holes"....

Winds are predicted to be light and variable, so should be plenty of opportunity to take a few runs at it before deciding. Keene is just 8 or so away, and there is a long grass strip across the river that I've not been into - Santa's I believe it's called.

Stuart & John's is about 43.005N/72.437W in foreflight.

Looking north. Track log landing to the south.
Landed slightly uphill towards road, rolled out along road to barn.

Departure to the south. Started all the way back at trees - off the ground just past house.

Overhead shot looking southeast, seeing Tom parked in the summertime VIP lot. Roger said we can't cross the road tomorrow - fence or wet or something.

Bob the Maule Master was in there on 850's if I recall from his photos last fall -

Driver maybe, Master not so much [emoji15]I did land there last fall on GoodYear 26" Blimpies, the ground was hard and dry 8.50's would have been fine. As mentioned the side slant on the hill was a little more than expected but no problem.I'm thinking the current LZ conditions might be muddy and soft, I would most likely do a recon drag. Seems like the weather between here and there will be a no go for me tomorrow.

It's easy, fly towards Santa's ( VT06 ) and head east 1 mile or head towards Pilgrims ( 2NH5 ) and head west a mile

Glenn

I live in Walpole NH, but it was dark when I got the word of a Stewart and John food flight so I didn’t get a chance for a field condition report. I expect most of the snow is gone, but not all and a soft top above the frozen ground. If it doesn’t work out, stop by my hangar at KVSF, Springfield VT and we can get some local sandwiches. Bill

I talked to Roger. We are good. Come by for late breakfast.

You guys are killing me, I just went out this morning and snow blowed my runway off so maybe I can fly again by May . Plowed north of my driveway a while back but wifey said I needed to put the insurance back on before I get in the plane so guess I'll just sit here and sulk.

Another fun day in northern Vermont. Took a student pilot up and showed him the fun that can be had. Then stopped by for his kids to see. He’s definitely got the bug now!

Winds weren't light and variable as predicted until this evening, but had a good time anyhow.
Good to see the showing of pilots - Thanks to Joe's buddy Scott for coming up in his Rans, and Brian and crew from Crow's Island in the Husky and Gyro.

After Glenn's wife Beverly kicked everyone's butt at coloring, I ate my son's favorite breakfast -

fullsizeoutput_255d.jpg

I got distracted testing out some oil temp ideas after getting back home so I forgot the gopro at the plane, but here's a couple inbound shots at the farm, in the field with no side-hill traction. Douten, this is so you can remember what it's like. :)

Forgot to mention - Joe, Scott and I flew over Santa's (VT06) on the way out, and Joe said he was either waving a shotgun or a big burly arm at us, so I said go ahead and land first, and if no holes appear in your wings I'll land too.

Turns out Dave Brewer and his wife... oh darn Joe, I've forgotten already... Tracy? Lisa? ... are great people, happy to have us land and enjoy their strip. He has an Aeronca L4 which he would like to sell, says low time and good condition. And, as they are planning on moving south, if you're looking for an airstrip in southern Vermont, this would not be a bad one to own. There is a community solar panel patch off the east side of the runway that they own 8 panels of, (leased land to GMP probably) and therefore have no electric cost at the house.

If a pilot doesn't buy it, we can pretty much write that strip off as gone.

Ha. I landed there with my Sportcopter and it was so muddy I slid all the way down to the bottom with breaks on. Guess I need bigger tires. Maybe time to sell my PA-11 and Sportcopter and upgrade to Cub with 31s. :)

You can put 31s on your 11, if you practice and get better in your 11 it will takeoff and landing as short as that whirligig

Are you guys trying out for wild Alaska bush pilots? Good job!

It was the Joseph Siegel Instructional (JSI) slide-away clinic.
Based on the documented footage, Joe failed to slide due to Bob-Hoover-like aileron inputs and therefore did not pass the sideslide currency test and will have to retake training at a later date.

I thought we all got recurrent at Bushwhacker's last summer in the screaming crosswind.....

That was only crosswind training JP. You have to come over to the Vermont border to get sidehill training on a greasy top surface. [emoji39]
