2017 Hunting and Fishing

Frosted wings. An over nighter! Wing cover season has arrived.

A bitch of a deer season in MN thus far. I had -9F this am. The winds have not relented either. After passing a really good 8 pointer twice chasing does last Sunday and watching maybe another 6 lesser bucks walk past, I fired a round tonight in anguish for some relief from from the cold temps and save my extremities. Dad at 87 years old, a Korean Veteran, shot a spike opening morning. I would venture to say it's his last deer and the last time his Winchester #100 will be manipulated by that man. Tough too see but also a wonder and blessing to have him along for the ride this long. WWHunter got a nice deer today also. Feeling Blessed!

Thanks for posting the picture Eric! It's been a pretty frigid deer season. It was -6 when I went out in the morning, and there were some fairly nasty winds. Have give part of the credit to my hunting buddy. He is visiting from SC. I felt nearly froze to the bone, went for a quick bite and he suggested that we go back out. The buck I shot was at a couple minutes after 1:00.
Like Eric, my father is out hunting also at 87 years young. I gave the deer to him since he was calling it quits due to the cold
Good luck to all the people out trying to fill their freezer!

My wife shot this buck at 150 yards in the trees. He was walking and when he paused for a moment she dropped him. Another one-shot kill for her. A nice clean 4-point.

Early in in the season I shot this 5-point at 200 yards.

In early November I joined some friends for a Kodiak Sitka Blacktail hunt and shot a couple of bucks.

Dan, one of the benefits of living in Oklahoma is that your buck would be a 10 point. All your deer trophies would double in size. :)

Wyoming Coyote hunting fun. All called in and shot with rifles.

I was fortunate enough to get this very nice one-eyed 9-point buck in December. And yes, his good eye was facing me when I took the shot. I also took a smaller buck at sunset on the last day of the season, so I didn't get a great picture. The freezer is very full. I'm grateful that I have plenty to share, but still would have considered it a success to just spend some quality time in the field.

Man! Looks like you guys are puttin the hurt on the local 'yote population
Wyo pay a bounty?
you marketing the fur?

When you run out of them in Wyoming you can come to Vermont and start on our population of those fawn killing machines!

No bounty, we sell some fur if the holes aren’t too big......
Just curious, what do you do with the rest of them? I understand that they may be predators needing to be destroyed. In boar country they seem to just leave them to feed the buzzards and other wild life. You appear to be collecting them. Are they edible?

You cook them first and let us all know how they taste. [emoji41]

A pile like that would have made for a good seasons wages for a kid back in the day. In the late 70s, trapped, skinned and stretched, about $75 ea, that little red fox around $200. Accounting for inflation that's about $300ea for coyotes by today's standards.
Starting early 80s, fur farms and Libs tanked the market. Haven't kept track since.
I mostly trapped thru high school, occasionally called them into buckshot or .22 range.
Looks like you guys are doing a number on the hides, beyond what a few minutes with a needle and thread would fix.
Buzzard food.

And yes, they take a toll on deer population during birthing season.

My gosh, I love bighorns. If there is one animal I could hunt in this lifetime that I haven't already pursued, that's the one. Well...that and ibex, if we're including overseas. We have things good in Alaska, but I sure wish there were a way I could get a bighorn tag. Someday, perhaps...

Thanks for that picture!

Huge coyote!!

I havent seen a coyote that big since a teenager living in SE Colorado in the late 70's. I called them in at night to a red spotlight dinner.

Alaska coyotes seemingly half that size!! But fun to hunt after jumping out the door of a Cub

Purchased this cub May 1st of 2017 and it sure has been quite the hunting/fishing/adventuring machine. I'm looking forward to this year where I will be a resident and be able to fully explore and enjoy what the great state of Alaska has to offer.
