rudder horn wear

hlb

FRIEND
Arkansas
PA 18 with compression springs to tailwheel; no tension with rudder neutral. The bushings in the rudder horn are worn thru and now the holes in the aluminum rudder horn are wearing. What replacement bushing? Steel or brass?
Thanks, Hunter

It is so oily back there . . . Either get those special bolts with the eye, or just drill and tap for a steel
bolt, and drill that.

Take springs off except for annual. Tail wheel will keep your aXs from dragging without them.

If the springs have dug into the aluminum I replace the steering arm. Saw one that someone had bushed oversize and it broke the ear off the aluminum steering arm. An AN42 eye bolt will keep it from happening again.

Ok, I have a cub that I am trying to fix that is 170 miles from me, what length eyebolt do I need? Is it a AN43-7? -6 or -5? Thanks, Tim

AN42B6A is what I use. Some use drilled and castle nuts. IMG_20191116_142730.jpg
7A if you do it like this with two AN970s and an AN960 washer.
