2016 Hunting and Fishing

It's a new year, so starting a new thread on hunting and fishing.

In late January, I finished up the duck hunting season in CA with my brother and his young Lab "Tank".

From CA, I flew over to NE Utah, then drove down to southern AZ to hunt javelina. Even though it was February, temps were still too hot for me. Lots of cactus and sticker bushes in that country.

These are from the first two trips of the year. Hoping to make another one to a new lake in a day or two. Caught a few pike. My wife just drew a really good moose tag though so I think this is going to be a good year!

Those critters must be hard to find when they are not moving. I had to blow up the picture just to see what it is. Not being knowledgeable on a variety of guns, What is that one? Is that a handgun with a scope?

They are hard to find, and can live in some pretty tough country. I spent a lot of time sitting under mesquite and junipers on ridge tops spotting across the valleys. They're not very big. This was a adult-sized "pig". The pistol is a Thompson Center Contender in .223 Rem. It's a single shot, break-action pistol with replaceable barrels to change caliber. I had originally planned on using my . 50 cal. muzzle loading rifle. But it was so hot and dry, and the grass so tall I was afraid of starting a fire if I shot the muzzle loader. So I borrowed the pistol from the friend I was hunting with.

Just a couple trips in 2016 so far.

Argentina for ducks, doves and perdez over pointing dogs.

Perdez over pointing dogs. Being a GSP owner, this was a lot of fun.

Many many ducks of all varieties and exotic species.

That, plus too many doves to even consider!

New Zealand for the toughest hunt I've ever been on for ducks, tahr and chamois.

Paradise ducks. The females have more color than the males. (More closely resembling the status of the humans!)

A great chamois. Many days on the mountains chasing these things.

A tahr taken above the clouds after walking up and down 2000-3000' of vertical for a few days at a time.

Now it's soon time for some great MN grouse hunting and WY pronghorn and deer hunting.

Don't know how I ever had time to work!

Nice pictures. So what's in the bags, caribou? If so, what are the bags and will a moose quarter fit in them? I ask because I am trying to figure out what type of bag to get for moose.

It's a moose. They are Caribou brand game bags. They sell them individually or as a whole set,which is what I bought. The moose package comes with 5 large bags for quarters ribs, 1 medium sized for hamburger and one slightly smaller bag for blackstrap tenderloin. They are reusable and tough, we have used them on 3 different moose and after you wash them they look brand new.

This one wasn't airplane-supported, but was still a nice surprise. Went out looking for caribou in the mountains, but never made it to the point where we intended to start climbing. When a legal moose is standing right next to the trail, well...you don't pass up that pile of meat! The only bummer is that I didn't really get to hunt - all I had to do was shoot and butcher.

Shooting an animal when you least expect it sounds like hunting to me. Good job on the nice looking bull! It took me 6 days in the field to fill a cow tag lol.

Wait, wait...are you telling me that they aren't always so cute? Say it isn't so!

Just ate his bird for dinner two nights ago. Well, Ok...it was an appetizer, not dinner. Still, it was really cool seeing how pleased he was to be feeding the family. Good stuff!

This was the hunt that started our season off. I am finally going to get the story put up later. I flew the cub all the way down the Aleutian Island chain while my daughter flew down commercially. I picked her up at the airport and shuttled the gear and her into camp. It was quite the adventure!
