    Sad News: Melissa Rogers

I just got off the phone with Ralph Rogers. If you have been to the Missouri Breaks fly in you know both Ralph and Melissa. Melissa was the little bundle of energy that did everything while Ralph stood around and talked.

Melissa passed away suddenly yesterday of a heart attack. She will be dearly missed.

I know many of you know Ralph well, please keep Ralph and family in your prayers during this very tough time.

Oh no, I remember speaking with them both at Johnson Creek last year and while catching up with them thinking that they were really hitting their stride in enjoying their retirement years.

Ralph, if you're monitoring, so sorry, and try to hang in there somehow.

So sorry to hear this Ralph. It wasn't so long ago that we were at the Winnifred flying and then camped next to each other at Johnson Creek. I remember you telling me how happy you were that Melissa had ridden with you in the Carbon Cub to JC. Her first time there. We had some good conversations sitting in the shade of your wing.

Though I didn't know her then, I remembered her leading the school band for the opening of the PN bridge across the Missouri in 1981. It wasn't until years later talking about that event at one of the Winnifred flyins that you mentioned that it was Melissa's band.

    Godspeed my friend.

Ralph I am so sorry to hear this. Will never forget that wonderful conversation and breakfast she fixed Tal and I that cold snowy morning we arrived in Winnifred on our way to Alaska. It was nice to get to visit with you two at JC this year. My heart felt condolences.

Oh my gosh---my heart goes out to you, Ralph and family. Melissa was always such a bright light on my trips to the Winifred Fly-In. Helpful and enthusiastic to a fault. I remember the time my wife called her in a panic because I failed to check-in upon arrival. Melissa dropped what she was doing at the house and drove down to the airport to remind me to call home. I can clearly see her sitting serenely in the hammock seat in your cub---ready to go. A first class lady. My sincere condolences.

I am still wearing the coat you and Melissa held for me for a whole year. I looked for that coat everywhere and never thought I would see it again!

Eddie got up during the night last night and, of course, had to check Supercub.org! He came back to bed and woke me up to tell me the sad news. Then we had to recall camping next to you at NH the year of the horrible storm and getting to know what a wonderful guy you are. Then Eddie had the good fortune to be with you and Melissa at the West Fork Meadow Lodge on your way to JC this past June. We will be thinking about you.

Very nice write up. We met at the flying a few years ago. I was so impressed with all both Ralph and Melissa were doing. Great people both.

Question for someone who might know. Article talks about an Arizona home. I'm wondering if they were here somewhere nearby. Maybe built a home on a runway or airpark near here as there are several.

I wasn't aware until yesterday that this thread was on SC.org. My sincere thanks to all who knew and loved Melissa... and if you knew her, you did love her. I also wanted to to tell a quick story.

On the day before the memorial, my daughter asked if there was room left in the hotel for some guy named Steve Johnson who had called and was on his way here to Winifred... in this sub zero weather. I confirmed that it was our Steve Johnson and we found him room. He got here and within 20 minutes, he looked around, saw where he could help and then made himself invaluable. Melissa's celebration of life was, in fact, a concert with timeline of her life. Steve helped with the music. There were many hundreds of people here, as one might suspect with a teacher who has taught for 38 years in the same small community. The ceremony was exactly what we envisioned she would like.

I am so grateful for Steve's help at this time... an innate sense of how to support.

Heartfelt thanks SJ...you are truly a class act. I appreciate your just "happening to be in the neighborhood"... 1200 miles from home when I needed you...and thank you so much for helping to celebrate Melissa.

This rambles...but will have to do. Melissa... I love you.
