What is your take on this rust?

Doing a pre-buy right now on a plane in AK, it was on floats for awhile, and I'm assuming this is directly related to that.

Guy doing the pre-buy inspection for me said it doesn't look bad and its not pitted.

    what do you guys think?

    haha!

I want it to fly around and use, not be a show plane.

So you're thinking it looks fine? nothing to cry about for the next few years most likely?

If that's not "pitted" I don't know what you would call it? Don't know what's allowed in a pre-buy but if it were mine I'd see if I could punch thru with an icepick to see if I was going to repair now or later?

I have virtually no experience in evaluating airframes but lower left corner looks pitted to me. Seems like it could be hard to tell what is tubing and what is an old layers of paint/fabric without sanding down to metal.

If it looks like that where you can see, what's it look like against the fabric? If you stab it with an ice pick, stab through the bottom of the fabric too. jrh
You can't get there from here. You have to go over yonder and start from there.

I thought the limit on corrosion was 10% of thickness

In my experience if you have one area that looks like that you have several more that are similar. Buyers market, be picky or make your offer accordingly.

Value! Are you buying a $150k plane, or a $50k plane? How is fabric? How is engine time?

Seeing that, and knowing it was on floats moves it down from top level values.

    Would I fly it? yes.

While it is difficult to be sure, it appears that this picture was taken of the lower right longeron just ahead of the tail post. That area is one of the most likely sections which does develop severe corrosion. At the very least I would plan on removing a little fabric in order to clean up this section. It will be a lot easier to fix this now than to wait for it to break, leaving the tail wheel behind.

The lower left corner of the picture is very suspicious. Is that a small crack or just a rusty paint chip?

Can you see or punch test the tail post area?

THAT is the question. Thats more that I would accept. Don'tget so wrapped up in this thing that you develop tunnel vision or selective hearing. Easy to do. That tubing is corroded / pitted. Unless the price was such that you could begin repairs immediately, I'd be passing on that one.

Looks like a pretty good pit in the lower left hand corner to me. My experience has been if you see one there are probably 10 more hidden. The other thing is if it is deep enough it is allowing moisture inside the tubing which is even harder to find until it fails. I have a tail section on the "Wall of Shame" with at least 5 cracks.

Seems like there are a bunch of really nice 70-90K cubs available if you wait a bit.

So you pay a guy to inspect the plane and he says it's okay but you post a single picture on the Internet to ask for assessments? Huh.

As I look at the fabric tape in the background, that looks like a very small area. The FAA did that to me one time, blew up some corrosion in a tiny area and blew the picture up and it looked catastrophic. "Looks bad" though.

If you don't know, then get pre buy assistance. Will be worth the money.

He gave no clue as to the price range. Perhaps if the price was low enough?
