    PPonk-50 conversion

I have been looking for a 180 several months now and can't thank all those that have answered my many questions enough.

Looking at one with a "PPonk-50 conversion 520" It has 825 hours and I did some research ere and ran across the recall on ECI cylinders. I am confused because the FAA proposal I read refers only to IO cylinders

"We received multiple failure reports of Airmotive Engineering Corp. PMA cylinder assemblies, part number (P/N) AEC631397, ECi Class 71 and Class 76, installed on certain CMI models IO-520, TSIO-520, IO-550"

Would this not apply to the Pponk conversion being carbureted?

A PPonk conversion uses TSIO-520 cylinders because they're lower compression than standard IO-520 cylinders. Some guys have snuck on IO cylinders to get a little more compression and power. In either case there are ADs for some ECI and SAP cylinders that require replacement of some serial numbers but more likely just repetitive inspections and limit life to one run. TBO on an 0-470-50 is 2000 hours, by the way. Not that you'd be compelled to comply with that as a private guy.

    Stewartb,,

Thank you for that info. I guess I will have to see if the owner knows if his cyl's are in the AD.

I am not clear if the engine is a 470 converted or a 520 as I understand PPonk did both.

It doesn't matter what it started as. It's using 520 cylinders now. My own Millenniums are limited to one run so I'm familiar with the cylinder AD topic.

The only difference between Pponks that start as 520s and 470s is the oil transfer location. That's determined by the crank and a case can be converted to accommodate either crank. Mine was a phase III 0-470 case and was machined for a 520 crank and oil transfer collar. The bones of the engines are essentially the same. Technically a PPonk is an 0-470-50 regardless of what it was before the STC. Texas Skyways calls their version an 0-520. Most of us PPonk owners use 0-520 as well, proper or not. It's a carbureted 520.
