I know about it here in Ontario as my Colorado buddy was landing behind them. Best I keep my lips shut and let someone with first hand reply to what the situation is now.

Yes there was an accident today, only one aircraft involved. There were injuries but we believe that both guys will recover. Out of respect of all involved let's not speculate about it until we have all the details. sj

If anyone has information on the health of those involved it would be appreciated. Don't really care about the details but would like to know if they are alright and out of the hospital at least.

I agree . At one time some pertinent info would be shared. Conjecture or speculation could be left out. Sounds like it is politically incorrect to even share the facts.

nothing has been said on any of the three sites I frequent.. it's almost as though the over 100 aircraft owners in attendance were told to not discuss this... I would like to know if this was an approach to landing accident, a ground loop, or what... I agree it has become somewhat politically incorrect to discuss or even mention anyof these mishaps..but then again it's why I avoid fly ins....

Folks, I think people are just being respectful here - and they don't have good internet in Johnson creek. I don't have current information on the condition of these fellows and I think we should wait until we have that. There is no conspiracy to keep information off of here, just the same kind of respect any of us would want were it us in the situation.

It was an attempted go-around executed too late. Unable to clear the trees.

Sometimes I feel things are better left unsaid. People often want to glob onto the negative, rather then focus on the positive...additionally we see folks ready to relish and post photos of others mishaps. Glad the folks survived...carry on Folks...hope to make Johnson Creek someday...

Sweeping events like this under the rug and focusing on only the positive is a recipe for repeating history. People want to learn from others so as to avoid making the same mistakes.

Agreed about #10. That is the objective facts I was interested in. However, #10 appears to go against politics.

There is a very big difference in "sweeping under the rug" and giving family, etc the benefit of knowing what happened first, and knowing all the facts.

Okay, I'll bite. How does political correctness enter into reporting on an incident/accident, irrespective of the reporter's accuracy of what occurred?

That's what happened. Anymore is speculation, which is what SJ is trying to avoid.

I don't see PCness, I think it is being a polite and respectful human being and fellow pilot to let those involved be allowed to tell their story. I read something about that once, in an Alaska flying book (an unwritten Alaska pilot code of conduct), and it makes sense. S**t happens. Sometimes it is pilot error and sometimes there are other factors that the pilot can't fully mitigate, hopefully they all heal completely and fly again.

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply, lots of emotions at this time. I was the pilot, received a broken arm stiches above the hairline and facial, shoulder and bruising to my feet. Jeff, who was with me broke his left arm, left leg, 2 ribs and his nose. as well as stiches to his nose and bruises. Very glad for all the help and care we received from all of you after the accident. I have been thanking our lord constantly that no one on the ground was hurt, and Jeff and I are alive. Clearly it was a mistake to try a go around at JC with density altitude and a 135hp Pacer. I was told getting low was key while flying the pattern in to JC. Turned final and saw I was high, slipped it down when I should have gone around then. after that it was one thing wrong after another. Very sorry to put a damper on your weekend.

The primary key in any aviation operation is to be ABLE to tell the story after the fact.

Congratulations on surviving a tough situation...I'm sure we all wish you a speedy recovery.

    Glenn,

MTV said it well, being able to tell the story is the most important part of the equation. Glad you and your friend are alive and will heal.

Many of us have a story or two to tell about things going bad, so don't feel alone or beat yourself up about it.

Bill Rusk talked about his scare on the river a few years ago, it was a good education for many of us - we were all glad he had survived that. Maybe some day in the future you can help others avoid the situation you found yourself in.

Until then, heal up and keep the faith!
I don't know where you've been me lad, but I see you won first Prize!

    Glenn,

The two of you will have great stories for years to come and at this point it's nothing that some paperwork, some good Burbon, some time, and something your new hat won't help fix.

Wear it with pride and humility, because you can... I know I do!

Glenn try and keep your head up. Easter before last I bent my cub luckily no one was hurt. It still makes me mad to this day. The new fuselage will be done in a couple weeks. Planes can be replaced or rebuilt the important thing is your both here to tell your story and fly again.

Yes, so glad you are still with us.

Had another one on the Biplane forum. I relay his accident here because it be the type flying(scouting) more commonly done in a cub? He "Moose Stalled" his Acroduster 2 Hot/High, Low/Slow. He stalled, recovered but realized he couldn't clear trees so he "stuffed"(his words) it into brush. Absolutely totaled but he went home to his family.

    His post,

"I stalled it in a bank at low level checking out one of my companies worksites. I recovered quickly, but it was hot and I was at 4,500' ASL. I was recovering but would not have cleared the trees in front of me. I cut the power and stuffed it into some brush. There was about two seconds between realizing I was done, and the Big Bang where a lot ran through my mind. Why it didn't go boom I have no idea. I can't say enough about how tough that little plane was. The truss design on the top wing, and all the extra framework saved my life. A passenger would not have made it though. Pretty much crumpled to my feet. I am 6'2" and 200lbs. What I learned from this is that it doesn't just always happen to someone else! "

    Gets my attention!

Be careful out there! I know our mates have learned very likely "their" lessons, I hope the rest of us learn from their mistakes. The Acroduster incident may indeed help to save my life. I just finished mine and now am doing the paperwork/FAA routine.......I've heard of it's lack of stall warning so Low/Slow scares the S... out of me! This friends mistake has put a big ! on my concern for sure!

Glad your ok. I had one that hurt my pride and bent my right gear a year ago. Landing on a road, I bumped the right brake (wearing snow boots) and it locked. I applied go around power, but after jerking hard right, the right gear hit the ditch/hill at a 45* angle at take off speed. My pride was hurt, my pocketbook was hurt...but they were nothing compared to the nightmare the Montana FSDO put me through. I wanted to deal with them honestly and just like any average GA pilot. I found out that the FAA, at least in Montana, wants to revoke pilot certificates, even though I broke no regs. It was my fault, I wasn't quick enough to correct the situation that 15' wide landing site. Luckily, my husband has been a 135 pilot for many years, so I started calling FAA reps that we know in other states. I was getting bullied big time and knowing that, and having advice on what my rights were and exactly what I needed to tell them calmed me down a lot. Hopefully your state is better, still, if you haven't already, get on AOPA Pilot Protective Services and line up a lawyer. Lisa

Folks, This is Jeff, I was with Glenn in the Pacer. I am also a pilot. Glenn and I have been friends for only a few months and he asked me to go on this Johnson Creek fly in with his buddy Dennis and Terry. (Great people!). I can tell you this. This entire cub community is full of very thoughtful and caring people. I am blessed to have been introduced to a few of you. During the approach to Johnson Creek, Glenn did everything he felt was right at the time. There were a lot of decisions that had to be made quickly. We had 5 planes in front of us, 4 behind us, lots of planes on the ground. A ton of things to process and then add in 8500 ft density altitude, it gets tricky quick with a low powered pacer. It was impossible to see in front of us, so it was hard to judge that critical point for a go around.

I am thankful to be here today to tell a great story. Glenn and I will heal, it's just bones and bruises and we'll remain great friends. I am already up and walking (with a walker) and have a ton of friends and family taking care of everything for me. I will get some nose work done in a month or so. Both legs and arm are healing up good and I can get to the bathroom on my own!!! Each day I realize how fortunate I am to be surrounded by such great great people. I'll get back to Johnson Creek someday and meet a bunch of you and I look forward to it.

    Jeff

Jeff, when I started this thread I feared the worse for you 2. I had already heard through the coconut telegraph about it. We are all in your corners and giving our good karma up for you guys to use. Thank goodness, it sounds like your taking advantage of it and cashing it in.

    Take care.

Jeff, So glad you are healing. I was crossing midfield when I saw you guys impact the tree. Having been in a similar accident I can imagine some of what you have experienced thus far. I was pretty concerned if I could get back in the air. Luckily those fears were squashed when my Dad took me up in a Super Cub with my leg, still in a brace, sticking out the door. Wishing you a speedy recovery both physically and mentally.
