Love the location Kyle, rock wall, old silo, hills behind shed, truly one of those old homesteads that produce nice turkeys. What a spot to hunt!!

Dipping Hooligan after we landed on a gravel bar on the Big Su at the mouth earlier this year
And this was sneaking up to within 6 feet of a bull caribou during a scouting trip my daughter and I went on for her caribou tag in the Talkeetna Mountains prior to her hunt.
What are Hooligan? That's a lot of fish in one scoop. Are you using them for bait or putting them in the freezer? Sneaking up on that boo sure was a thrill. Thanks for sharing.

Hooligan are very similar to smelt, but quite a bit greasier. We fry them or smoke them, and use them for pike and burbot bait in the winter.
Kaylee and I fished the Innoko River in western Alaska three weeks ago for pike. We both caught a pike 50 1/2" long. Mine weighed 28 lbs and hers was 26 lbs. Man she is tough to beat.

They got a second bull on the way out. The kids was just under 60" with 6 brow tines a side.

Shot a very nice musk ox in Greenland the first week of August.
Was a real long range affair. Actually about 10 yards and he wasn't happy with me!
Musk ox is amazing meat. We ate plenty of it the week in hunting camp.
I hoped we'd see some more early season pictures of moose, caribou and sheep. Anyone have some?
All I've got to show so far is a turkey.

Judging by the photo, your skill hasn't perished.
I enjoyed the XP-100. I carried Chandler's .223 for spring Hooter hunting. Luckily the Blue Grouse'd stay perched long enough for attempts at, and finally success at, a head/neck shot. Nowhere close to 200 yards tho.

Worked about 10 years in Greenland (Sisimut -- Sondrestrom Area). Banding falcons on long hikes in places you could only get to by helicopter. Those things were a pain in the a$$. There were many really old bulls who had no harem but were still defending a territory. They could be a handful and as you know now after your hunt....the trees (birch) are about 10 inches tall. Fond memories of a place I grew to love through the years. R

A bitter sweet trip to ND for me. My beloved lab Jack of 7 years did not make it this fall. He was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma a few months ago and I buried him 2 weeks ago. Will save his story for a grouse hunting thread to follow.
I have a new yellow Pup that Jack had a few weeks to be with and teach. I would say he did more for the training than I did. I thank God for having some overlap even though it was too short.
Toby is 12 weeks old. Born July 18. I have been hunting some grouse with him but was warned by many not to attempt Roosters at such a young tender age. My theory is to dive in and get your feet wet so I brought the new pup and was careful to only hunt part of each day. My dogs don't go to a trainer. They ride in the plane and the tractor and go everywhere I go. I try to teach them what I want them to do for me using no bells and whistles or electronic crap.
I hunt extreme SW ND. When one drives around and looks at the premium cover there is often times numerous Cannonball signs posted there saying "leased for hunting Cannonball". Cannonball is a huge outfit driving some landowners to let them police their boundaries and pay a land lease and then so much $ per bird harvested. Many landowners are sick and tired of running folks off the lands that they have posted. So not that I'm a huge fan of Cannonball; for the person not having lands setup for days of hunting, it might not be a terrible idea. I have seen some premium locations with exclusive rights leased to them. They have a lot of acres to hunt believe me. They are in my very area that I visit. Public lands on the Plots Guide map are out there but they get pounded real hard. http://www.cannonballcompany.com/
For three days we shot limits each day. There are many birds, young and mature. Numbers better than last year. Toby at 12 weeks fetched about a dozen birds. He has short legs and is only developing that nose so he isn't running cripples for hundreds of yards. Toby wants to please me and understands the Rooster needs to be brought back to me if he can get his mouth around it. Jack gave him some pointers. It's like he knew that was his job before he had to go.

Dang Scout, I'm sure sorry to hear about Jack. Your posts with his pics were my favorite on here. You don't need a trainer for that new pup. Look at his eyes. He's just waiting for you to show him what to do.
I know how you feel. I lost Old Bear Dawg last year. He was 15. I never shot any birds over him. He would point moose and bear. The state wouldn't let me hunt with him, so we just did it for fun. I did use him for tracking after I shot one.
Did your Dad get to go hunting with you on this trip?

Hunting dogs are here far too short of a time already, really tough to loose 'em early, I'm still missing "Jazz" who was a truly amazing pheasant dog at 4.5 years.
I'm working Big Bang Theory's "Penny" (and yes you have to knock on the kennel and call her name three times) for the beginning of her second season, slow but promising.

A good dog leaves a hole in your heart that can only be filled by a new pup, and if the old dog did not go, you would never have the joy of the new one. It is a cycle that only a true dog lover under stands. My 3rd great bird dog is now 9 and just starting to slow down I hope I have a few more good years with her. And no we did not shoot the dog.

Had Great day in the Yoop--- did a little Bird Hunting and Exploring, found an old abandoned Airport near Ralph Mi that is still accessable for many types of aircraft, the Grouse hunting near by was pretty good too, Score: Grouse 4, Rick 1, tuff hunting on foot without a good dog! my reaction time seems to be failing a bit with age......Lol

I was in Gunnison Colorado for the 3rd season elk hunt with my son in law Wesley. We both shot elk and it was his first one! Great to be right beside him as we stalked and he shot his 4X5 elk at 140 yards.
Outfitter was Quaking Aspen in Gunnison and our guide was Rick Sandoval.
Opening day general season Montana.

So three days into deer season I have passed a nice 10 pointer thick in Raspberry bushes about 70 yards out. Second guessing taking the shot but tracking or losing any animal is a real loser. I've occupied the time running Flight Aware on overhead jets with smart phone, watching the moon and stars go to sleep and praying the shots heard close by are clean kills and from those in my party. Have some real nice bucks on trail camera and 13 more days to hunt. Here is a peek into the past few days. Not many deer seasons in MN where bats come out at dusk and frogs can be heard peeping. We are mild.

Left Alaska for a week of deer hunting with a close friend in Kansas. Had a blast and shot a heck of an old gnarly buck!
Sorry for the crappy pic, however this was my Veterans Day bull taken at last light at about 7500-8000' in SE Wyoming near Saratoga.
Hiked up and down mountains for several days, but conditions weren't great as it was WAY too warm.
Until the snow arrived.
The snow made it better hunting, but much worse getting around, especially for a flat lander like myself from 1200' MSL northern Minnesota.
Well earned trophy and LOTS of additional meat for the freezer!
Now I just have to be in Oklahoma for hog and deer hunting at a friends ranch and finish 2015 big game hunting deer in Iowa at another friends farm where I drew a gun season license for early December.
Then it's back to late season grouse hunting with the GSPs.
Retirement is tough, but some one has to do it!!!
