    Replace bungees on PA-12

Anybody give me a heads up on changing the bungee`s on a PA-12 ? not sure how to access them to take them out . do you go through the access from the bottom of fuselage ? do you need to take the weight off the gear ? not sure never changed them on a 12. J-3 yes thanks for any help.

hoggboy: As so many others, you do not say where you are---IF you are anywhere within a 100 mile radius, I would be happy to show you how it is done. I hesitate to try to TELL you---those bungees are very strong and CAN BE dangerous if not properly handled. Really not a big deal with a good tool.

Google "PA-12 shock cords" and you will get a list of Univairs Pipers Service Memo's, scroll down to SM11 for PA-12 shock cord directions. Find a knowledgable PA-12 guy with the correct tool, Clyde Smith provided tool building instructions to the Cub Club. IMO the pivot point and the hook need to reverse positions on Clydes tool then you can sit in the rear seat and muscle the tool easier. Not for the faint of heart. Good luck, Jim
Oh, and while your in there plan on replacing the rubber bumpers. Maybe take a good look before you start for possible needed weld repairs where those bumpers " bump".

I tie a loop with nylon tie down strap thru the bungee ,put a pry bar 2 1/2' long thru the loop. Using wooden blocks as a fulcrum lift the bungee off the mount lug, then use a large screw driver to slide the bungee away from the lug and let it down. Use a bowline know so you can untie the strap. Installing the nylon is slippery and can be pulled free. At your own risk, and keep your fingers clear- move things with tools only! Good luck.

I have the right tool for 25++ years... but GLADLY PAY(customer pays, same) some other place to do the job!!!!

kinda like when I was a teen and did car tires at the local garage.. training was pointing at the 12' ceiling where the thingy ma-gig went through the sheetrock if ya didn't hold on tight....

same thing when I borrowed a coil spring compressor from other garage... point at 12' ceiling, see hole... respect it!!

Changing bungee's is black art. Bring your airplane to me and I will do it for a thousand dollars, per cord.

Like most things in life, to one it is a black art to others it is just something you learned that is now "easy". Doesn't matter what it is!

Funny you mention Masons. The first time a new candidate comes to lodge and they are a cub driver, we teach them how to change bungee's

What Geezer said--- get the 12 bungee tool. You can get seriously hurt if you don't know what you are doing and/or attempt to jury rig. No one brought it up--- but I learned---I have three 18 HD bungees on each horn rather than two. A bit stiff to begin with--- but if you load up your plane w/ camping gear etc it keeps the 12 from "squatting." There was an issue with bungees for a few years, but think they are now out of the inventory---I had to change mine out twice in three years. Don't think I have needed to change them now in five years and I do a lot of practice landings in grass/ short field workouts.

I just don't see it to be that bad a job, just keep your fingers where you can see them.the bottom line is take it to a shop that will let you watch them do it, then you make the judgement call the next time whether or not you can do the job. Above all you need to give God a little room to weed out the stupid.

You might give Browns sea plane base in Winter Haven a call, they operate a fleet of Cubs . There might be a mechanic there that has experience with them.

Say there, I recently purchased a PA-14 and it looks as if the left side is a bit droopy... and needs shock cords. Looks as if I could use some sage advice before making the attempt. What do I need to do to get this job done in 20 minutes? Any suggestions you would offer would be much appreciated.

Seems like I remember reading somewhere that the 12 took 2 of one weight bungee and one of another, or do they take the same weight bungees
