    Aircraft title

First time buyer here . Trying to figure out if the Title to an PA-18 piper aircraft is the same as the registration document that the fAA sends you when you send in the 802 form ?. Or is it a separate piece of paper like a car title . And is there a way to retrevie a lost title if the owner dose not have one ?
    Thanks

No title. FAA Registration is all we get and these days it's only good for three years. You'll need a Bill of Sale (FAA form) to document transfer of ownership. In Anchorage we have unrestricted access to common FAA forms at the FSDO entry vestibule. If you aren't near a FSDO you can download some forms but not the Registration Application, as noted on the linked page.

PS, if the plane has a 406 ELT installed make sure you re-register that as well. Nothing in the sale docs will prompt you about the ELT.

Also. Get a title search to check for liens. Cost about $100. I have had a few airplanes over the years still showing money owed! Banks somehow forget or don't know to file releases.

The transfer paperwork has to be filled in perfectly. Just had one kicked back because the previous owners signature look like he printed his name.
