I'm taking my Bushwheel bolt out tomorrow -- would be nice if the Bushwheels folks would post here and tell us what they know about this problem.
The Bolts and BW eye bolts both break. Most people torque that little bolt way too loose they wear out then break.
If you never want the tail wheel bolt to break then take out that little bushing or "spacer" as they call it. Drill the tail spring hole larger or file it. Install AN-8 bolt. That sucker will NEVER break.
Stewart, good point. I didn't get what you were saying in your first post. Makes perfect sense now. Never thought of that. Talked to Bill Duncan about this today and the manufacturer is being made aware and the failed bolts are going to the metallurgist. Will be interesting to see what is found.
Dan, where do you get the eye nuts? I'd like to see a more close up picture of them.
It is really impossible to make a strong bolt with an "eye" on the head. Nuff said.
Lifting eyes are rated for industrial rigging. The lifting eye nuts I'm familiar with are rated at 10% of actual tested loads. A typical size for what we're discussing here would be a 2100# rating or anticipated failure at 21,000#. Sounds pretty strong to me. You can purchase unrated eye nuts as well. Choices, choices.
What airframe is it approved on?
Strange thing -- the Rosen Visor, of all things, comes with an STC. However, the Bushwheel eyebolt comes with no paper wprk. Is that because Bushwheels has qualified it to be equivelent to an AN bolt? Just wondering how one simple thing requires an STC and another one doesn't?
All this chat about an eye bolt on the tail wheel so I have something to tie to without getting dirty. What a bunch of wimps! How about you first get down there now and then and clean off the grease, and then tie the rope, or just wipe off your hands. In all my years and all the cubs I have owned, I have never had a bolt fail in the tail, never had an eye bolt and if I did have one, I would remove it. If you are going to tie to something why would you not use the spring and tail wheel? I do not tie to strut mounted tie rings for the same reason, there is something better. Tail wheel eye bolts sound kinda city slicker to me.After looking my first post over, sounded like my head in rear end. I dont hold anything against Bill & ABW. For all I know the nut was loose, and the dumbass pilot shouldnt have taxi thru a hole in the ground. I know the nut was there on preflight, but I now check the tightness every so often. Every time I ever spent a dime at ABW, always figured I got a quarters worth back. Even a free meal every now and then too. Keep up the good stuff ABW

I replace the AN7-21 bolts in Scott 3200 tail wheels on Super Cubs at every annual.
